The Real Scoop

by anwar.knight 21. October 2011 16:21

Okay so right off the top...I will be first to admit I'm new to the "group", and perhaps as such maybe shouldn’t be "barking" quite yet. I have always loved them...but never was I master to one... until 4 weeks ago.

I have had a slew of other pets over the years....budgies, gerbils, newts, rabbits, of course cats, and even a pet chicken. (Well chickadee). But Nova is my first pooch. She's growing like a weed, and yes there are difficult days....oh believe me, I have tried the Mexican "chhhh", as Ceaser Milan would have you believe...that’s all it takes.

I say - "bull chhh", sorry Ceaser, love your show....but that ain't working. As I'm learning it’s all apart of puppy hood, and it’s an evolving experience, as well as a rewarding one. I love Nova, but maybe I should have called her "Hoover" because she sucks up everything in sight. I cant tell you, what I have fished out of her little mouth, maybe that would explain what ends up coming out of the other end.

That’s in fact what I really wanted to blog about. What’s up with these "animal lovers" who don’t clean up after the pet. People it’s pooh, its bacteria, parasites and again POOH!! I know it’s not fun, coming from a gentle germaphobe, its one of the worst things to do. Just the thought, that there is only a micro millimeter of plastic that separates my hand from the stinky waste, was at first enough to make me hurl -BUT I STILL DO IT!!

I cant tell you how gross it is to be walking out in a nature park, enjoying the fresh air, the pitter patter of little Novas feet as she (I swear) smiles during our daily adventure...only to be surprised and halted by a huge pile of crap! I swear someone owns a mule in my neighborhood. It was a fly attracting speed bump. Gross, Gross, Gross. If you don’t want to take care of your pet then don’t have one. Attach a leash to your couch pillow and drag that around the neighborhood. We will all be happier.

If you believe that picking up crap is beneath you...then let your canine crap in your own backyard. There you can let it pile as high as you like - you can cover it with plywood, plant a tree over it, dig a hole and bury it...I don’t care....JUST DONT LEAVE OUT IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. Do you have any idea how filthy it is? Some studies suggest a single gram of dog doo, contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. It pollutes the ecosystem, and if your dog has worms, it infects other dogs with the parasite. In fact your consistent laziness could be the trigger to an endless cycle of worms for any and all other neighbourhood dogs who comes in contact with that pooh. That infection can potentially be transmitted to your family. How would you like it if your child contracted worms from the family dog, because someone refused to do the right thing and poop and scoop.

Wooooohhh, deep Breath, sorry to get all worked up about it.... I realize that I am specifically talking to a small "litter" of offenders...but they are ruining it for the rest of us. You do realize "they" are the reason dogless neighbours look and at times scowl at us as we walk by their house, thinking that we are the ones who left that stinky grass burning gift.

Did you know there are almost 2 dozen neighbourhood developments in the U.S that have now implemented a doggy DNA registration?. If you choose to live in these upscale complexes and own a dog you must submit a DNA of your dog. Snoopers will search the poopers and they will be charged. I don’t know if we need to go that far....yet, but then again if "poo prints" is what it takes...bring it on.

Properly trained, a man can be dog's best friend.

Here, here Anwar!!  I couldn't agree with you more about this issue.  Thank you for putting this out there.  I have owned a dog for the last 13 years and it has been a bit of a "pet" peeve of my.  Thank you!

I sooooooo agree with you.  I live in a building that is very dog friendly...I have a small pooch whose "pooh" is of the small nature...I scoop de poop and put it in the appropriate container set aside for us doggie moms and dads....but there are a few small few with, as you surmize, a mule whose doggie doo is huge and gross and usually around where kids play...I actually brought to the attention of our superintendent the DNA story in the States....I think its a fab idea...hopefully it will be implemented some day...soon...

Have fun with Luna...I love my pets...(3 cats and 1 dog)...I am a pooper scooper!  LOL...

I agree.  It really irks me when I see other dog owners not cleaning up after their pets.  It makes the rest of us look bad as well.  There is one thing I feel I must point out.  You stated "but never was I master to one"  As an experienced dog lover and owner I can tell you straight up, you never will be master to one, rather they master and train us..after all..they are as much a part of the family as anyone else and they do love their people, once they get us trained that is.  Enjoy and love your new master.  *smile*

Oh Anwar, if you could hear me muttering while I clean up after my dogs..and the other dogs..and any other stray deposits I come across. THERE IS NO EXCUSE for not picking up after your dogs. Like all the park signs around the city say re poo bags: "Take a pair, and a spare to share". I work as a dogwalker/trainer and it is my job to pick up after the dogs that I work with, it is NOT my job to pick up after other people..but I do. Because I care about my neighbours, my dogs, the children who play in the parks and even the nice shoes that regularly get smeared because some jerk left dog poo on the sidewalk..okay, rant over.
Welcome to puppyhood with a golden retriever by the way...I hope you found yourself a good puppy class! It's important! Both for your sanity and for your pup!

Anwar you hit the nail on the head.  I am not a dog owner, but at times I wish I could tolerate cleaning up after a dog because I believe they are truly man's/woman's/kid's best friend.  Back to the pooh business, I think there are many dog owners out there that give you responsible dog owners a bad rap.  We look out for those dog owners, but 99.9% of the time we miss them after their dog has crapped on my lawn.  It infuriates me and then the ones that we catch - they are the same ones all the time - there response is "I don't have a bag" - isn't it your responsibility to have a bag as soon as you go through the door?  One example - some guy walks his dog with his girl friend and kid in stroller, and he lets his dog crap on the run - the dog has to literally do his business on the run - and does it on the grass, the road and even on the sidewalk.  That just really pisses me off.  But he is one of these people you dare not question for fear that he might retaliate.  That's why I am one of those people who look at you dog owners and scowl at you...

Hi Anwar, had a good chuckle on what you should have named your dog alias "Hoover".  We have two 11 month old golden retrievers.  One we should have named Dyson.  He managed to swallow two stones at 4 months old.   One he heaved up, the other got logged in his intestine and had to have surgery to remove the stone.  However this doesn't keep him from trying other objects especially now that he can reach the kitchen counter.  They are like kids you have to keep you eye on them every minute. If it is too quiet they are up to no good.  Wait until she finds out how much fun digging holes can become and how much fun it is to strip branches off the cedar trees and use it for dental floss.  They are a very social animal and love other dogs - if you can find an enclosed doggie park  they are great as a tried puppy is a happy puppy.  Congratulations and enjoy as the love you receive in return is worth it.

Luv it. Anwar you have the best dog. I also the same dog, his name is Tbone, we also have a shitsu her name is Pepe, we love them dearly.
I must add that  "SHIT PATROL"  comes with owning a dog.
My Tbone has a basket of stuffed toys, and he loves them, when someone that he knows comes to the door he runs to his basket and brings them a toy. Luv  your doggie, its love you are sure that will be returned to you.

As a dog owner that takes care of my dog's poop, I HATE when other people let their dogs poop on my front yard, and don't pick it up.  I once had a lady who had the nerve to say to me, (when I confronted her about her dog that just pooped on my yard).."you have a dog, just pick it up when you pick up your dog's poop"....The nerve!

Count your lucky stars that you live in the city!Atmleast most people there are responsible pet owners. Up here in the north hardly anyone picks up! Sure, if your dog is going in the bush somewhere, it's not really a big deal; but supermarket parking lots? Get a grip people! I'm afraid to walk my dog there because, even though I always pick up, I'm afraid people will think it's my dog's poo!

Nova looks just like you!  You can tell she is "family".  She is absolutely gorgeous.  Enjoy every moment of puppyhood - they grow up so fast!

As for people not picking up after their dog, I can just imagine how they tell their kids it is okay to break the law by not picking it up.  You have a pup who poops, pick it up!

You are so correct. It will be worse in spring once the snow melts and you find all of the surprises that people left during winter.
Always have a treat (we use another variety of kibble) in your pocket and
Reward for good behavior. Remember on the 31st put her in a crate with a good bone
Keep her safe that night.  It's a crazy night with the routine changed and your pup can easily get into something.
They don't understand the costumes and decorations as well.
Having a pet is beneficial to both you and your pet

Congratulations Anwar,

You have a beautiful pup.  When I got my Shelties 15 years ago, I had forgotten that puppies are just like babies (which they are) and babies (dog or otherwise) are curious and also put everything in their mouths.  I gave my  pups a big piece of rawhide to chew on (under supervision to make sure they didn't have any problems with sharp edges) to help with teething and they didn't chew furniture or shoes, it also kept them busy so they didn't get into anything else.  Also be firm with the training, reward and most of all have patience.  Puppies again like little kids have a very short attention span.  We did our training in short spurts but it really worked.

My dogs are gone now but I have a heart full of love and memories that they have left me with.  I sincerely hope that you enjoy every moment that you have with your beautiful Nova.  They are a blessing and although sometimes can drive to crazy, most times they are full of fun and love.  Enjoy the love and laughter, it is good for you.

If you are good owner and train your pup Nova will be a great dog.

Good Luck
Margaret

Anwar, you picked the best breed in the world with a Golden.  Trust me, she will become your closest confidant, friend and companion.  They have such loving trusting personalities.   Be sure to crate train her and do puppy training
classes with her so she become well rounded and outgoing.  They will teach her to interact with other dogs and people.  Thank you for being a responsible owner.   You are the type of person I look for when placing my puppies.  May you have a long and happy relationship with Nova.

Very well written!!  You are 100% correct.  Where we live there is a park at the end of the street, people let their dogs do their business and just leave it.  They think they are too good to stoop and scoop.  We had a nighbour who actually trained his dog to walk to the park on his own, drop his business and come back.  Thankfully they are no longer on the street but it is that mentality that needs to be changed.  The parks are there for people to be able to enjoy, kids to play in without having to worry about stepping in or rolling in dog pooh.
Thanks for writting about it.  Maybe you should talk about it more on air.
Good luck with your puppy, dogs are great companions.  Cheers!

I agree 100%!!  I also get the dirty looks from people when I'm walking my dog (as I do every day, even though he has a big yard).  It seems to escape people that I'm usually carrying a brightly coloured bag of dog poo with me.  I have those dangling dog bone poop bag carriers on all of my leashes, so I'm never caught short.

I used to be embarrassed about being seen in my smaller town picking up my dog's poo, but now I feel proud, because people should realize that I'm doing th right thing!

Congratulations on your first dog! I got my first dog 8 years ago when I was 23 years old and living far away from my family.  He has truly been my best friend and I think that having a pet is very rewarding and it helps you emotionally and physically.

P.S. It gets better..or you just get used to it, not sure which.  Smile

Anwar,

I agree with you 100% on the pooper scooping. As for life with a puppy/dog, it gets so much much better, I promise. Nova looks like my 9 month old Golden Retriever named Sadie. I think being prepared for a certain amount of destruction in the first year or so of life is likely a good idea. In the first 6 months we had Sadie, she ripped apart our baseboards and several of my daughter's toys/books. During the summer months she has taken to eating the wood mulch I have on my flower garden in the back yard and then proceeding to rip out all of the landscape fabric. Needless to say I have moved that grden to my front yard.

After all of this, it melts my heart to see Sadie playing so well with my almost 3 year old daughter. When my daughter is sent to timeout, Sadie insists on going with her and comforts her when she cries. Nova will be your best friend, all you have to do is let her. Good luck with the puppy training and I hope you enjoy all that owning a dog has to offer.

I could not agree with you more...My issue is with "Dog Parks".  Now the city has been kind enough to offer these for our furry friends...The least people could do is pick up at these locations.  If people dont want to pick up put a diaper on your dog....

Nova is a beautiful puppy! congrats on joining the doggie world!  Enjoy puppyhood as it does go by so very fast - lots of pictures and plenty of patience goes along with the joyful feeling of dog ownership.  Pick up your dogs poop people! My husband and I have bags in every pair of pants, every coat pocket we own; not to mention the ones that get left in the washer and dryer every time we do the laundry! One of my dogs is a "walker" when she poops and we follow her around the neighbourhood with bags picking up little bits until she is finished - i mean, how hard is it for goodness sake - you cannot be that busy, just thoughtless to others. Anwar, enjoy Nova, train her well and she will be your companion for life - congrats again!

Thank you for talking about this issue!  I live in a condo, where it would seem a few folks feel they are exempt from the poop and scoop rules.  We know the guilty parties, but they insist it isn't them!  They allow their dogs to poop in the children's playground.  It is disgusting.  Congrats on Nova..what a beautiful dog.

I have a dog (Westie) for just over 2 years now, it was my Mom's who past away and I took him in.

Another thing, these folks who pick up the pooh in the bag but then leave the bag on the ground or hang it on the tree branches - common people, yeah it smells but take it with you until you can find a garbage bin, there are lots around.

It's not that bad and even if I can't find a bin, I take it home.

I'm going to put up signs in my area where Mac and I go for our walks - it's bad, even all over the sidewalks.

I agree 100%.  I have been a dog owner for over 50 years. Four dogs in that time, so I have done a lot of super duper poop scooping. For every pile I have scooped on a walk, I have found 3 piles from other dogs.  Love the idea of DNA testing.  The best idea I have heard in a long time.  Cleaning up after your pet is one those things you have to do.

Welcome to the world of doggie love.  Your life will never be the same.
I wish I could print and post your blog all over the park this spring when the snow melts.  It it isn't bad enough now, when the snow melts it is like a land mine.  Just because the poop melts the snow doesn't mean you can't go in after it.  Just because it is dark, doesn't mean you can walk away from your doggie's doo-doo.  I carry a small flashlight in my pocket for after dark walks.  I don't want you or anyone else stepping into it.
Leaving dog poo gives all of us dog lovers a bad rap.  When your dog poops - you stoop and scoop...all together now...stoop and scoop...

I also agree with all of your comments about people who do not clean up after their dogs but more importantly, I want to say that I also own a golden who liked to hoover the whole neighbourhood and my house.  One day, he ate an entire swiffer duster and some $3000. and an emergency surgery later he is doing well but still cannot be trusted not to eat anything he can find.

I thought a word to the wise was in order!

Best of luck with your pooch.  Trust your experience will be better than mine.

Great update, Anwar. I can see that Nova is already "family".
Many say that laughter is the best medecine, but I say our four legged friends are the absolute recovery medecine - and they keep on charming us day after day after day.....
My Tage (a beautiful Nova Scotia Toller) is my favourite redhead, and best gal.
She makes happy days even better, and difficult days tolerable.
Like you, I never leave on our walks without pooper bags, and treats. And I am disgusted with the mess we see in the parks, on lawns, even on the sidewalk. You wonder what the homes of the "owners" of this mess look like. Not the dog, but the no-class human that can't be bothered to bend over and scoop.
I would love to see doggy DNA-checking arrive in Toronto. Keep pushing for it.
Good to see you daily and in great health We both know HOPE HAPPENS - and our dogs just add to the success story.
Dad and dog - a great team.
Warmest regards,
Alan

Hi Anwar, I think Nova is a beautiful addition to your family. Of couse she can smile with a "Dad" like you. We have a 12 year old Siberian Husky named Anoek. Since we don't have grandchildren yet, she is our grandchild. We have always stooped and scooped.  If we are in our own back yard with her and end up having a brief chat with our neighbour while she completes her business transactions elsewhere in the yard, she will come to us with that look on her face that says, "Aren't you forgetting something?" She wouldn't even let us think of leaving the site without helping her dispose of the poop. We also carry our biodegradable bags with us everywhere. They live in pockets, the car, my mom's house... everywhere. I hope Nova's "Mother" is as enamoured with her as you are.  Please take and share lots of pictures of "Baby's First Cristmas".

I can so relate to your Nova-business. Methinks dawgies should a "pre-petual" that requires pooh duties! She's gorgeous. We're also on our first dawgone dawgie - former cat people - it's been a trip.

I can also relate to your human journey - and can tell you I've been there (twice), done that plus thyroid cancer and currently breast cancer (thanks to all that ancient radiation that cured me the first two times!) and I'm still kicking butt! (or so my hubby tells me). Cancer is a fearsome word that we must first wrap our heads around. I'm in my 60s so I've lived through the covert labels given it "back in the day". Now even doctors use the "C" word candidly and I consider that a big step forward. Glad to hear your journey's been such a successful one! Nice to see your handsome mugg back on the air.

It disgusts me how lazy people have become in general.  There is a woman in my neighbourhood who picks after her dog, but too lazy to carry it.  She throws it under the nearest bush/tree/lawn/wherever afterwards.  I'm also a dog walker.  The dog parks and off-leash areas are the worst.  I get angry.  I no longer go to those places.  The dogs step in it, transfer it to the car, in the house, etc.  I used to take a group of 5 or 6 dogs to the dog park, picked up after all of them, and walked around picking up bags and bags of dog poop just to keep the park clean for my group.  I think dog parks are for people too lazy to properly train or walk their dog.  I've seen some of their yards.  Ít's disgusting how filthy they are, but the people don't seem to care.  Then they wonder why their dog gets worms.

My dog goes three times a day.  Whether hiking on trails or in her yard, I clean up and bring it to the garbage can.  Every single time.  Her yard is kept spotless.  She deserves it.

Those who are responsible dog owners NEVER forget to bring a bag, because, as others have said, you have them in every conceivable pocket, in the car, purse.

Those who say they ''forgot'' are the ones that tend not to pick up at all.

Congratulations on your new family member!
