Nights on White Satin

by anwar.knight 23. June 2010 11:50

In case you didn't catch it, Monday morning marked the official start of summer, 2010.

As a weather weenie it's something that I usually take note of. This time, June 21st was a little different. I was thinking about the last time I had a summer off, those coveted 3 months, when I didn't have to report for duty at a place of employment.

Think about that for a moment too. It turns out for me, I was 13. I won't say exactly how many years ago that was, but let's just say … it was a while ago. Yes at 14, I eagerly entered the "real world" and had the deductions on my pay cheque to prove it. I was a nerdy teenager, flipping quarter pounders under the Golden Arches -- that was the beginning of the end, to summer as I knew them.

Until now. Never in a million summers would I ever have imagined that I would be spending these months, and then some, undergoing treatment for cancer. That in itself, cancels out any remote suggestion that this is really a summer off -- or does it?

Of course I would never have planned this. The reality is, like many others, I have to deal with it and I'm thankful, at least, it's happening during the summer months. On occasion I'm actually enjoying some of the warm summer sun.

This month, however, is also posing some noteworthy challenges -- namely the G-20 summit. Leaving aside all the headlines it has generated -- for me, and hundreds of other patients, it means one thing -- A PAIN IN THE ASS. With a treatment scheduled for G-20 Friday, my personal game plan was put into play weeks before most announcements were made. I managed to move up the treatment to day earlier -- the Thursday.

As the paranoia continues to escalate, precautionary measures were put in place for all University Ave hospitals. Princess Margaret, understandably, is now re-scheduling almost all of Friday chemotherapy appointments to Thursday. I don't blame the hospital, in fact I'm not blaming anyone in particular -- I'm just speaking up for the little guy. I can't imagine the stress some families will have to go through trying to access the hospital in a timely and safe manner. My contingency plan includes spending the night before at a friend’s house in the north end of the city. I can only hope that will mean easier access coming south into town, rather than trying to navigate through a rat's maze of fences and security checks in the security zone.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but something should have been considered, especially for urgent care and the elderly (I don't count myself in either). For these people, it's crucial they be able to get in and out with out any delay or drama. I will certainly let you know how things unfold in my next blog.

Anyway, aside from that, I'm doing well. Everything has been going according to plan … for the most part. My last session had a few hiccups. The drug/IV drip was processed too quickly and started to burn my vein. (A note those having chemo therapy in the future: it's very important they use a heat pad to warm your vein. Apparently it allows the area to expand. Make sure you also tell them right away if you feel any tingling or burning.)

When I felt that burn, the drip was slowed down and we were on our way. I had to return 4 days later due to throbbing pain in that burned arm. The team was terrific at assessing the condition and making sure there was no serious damage, but it now means my right arm can no longer be poked liked a pin cushion. It's off limits from this point on. No blood tests, no IVs, no treatments. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but I always liked flip flopping between arms.

Beyond that, the fatigue and aches and pains in general were not quite as bad as the first 2 rounds. However I have noticed a pattern when it comes to hair loss. I think all guys have a sixth sense when it comes to their hair, especially if they are losing it.

First of all, at the moment, I'm happy to report I haven't been Kojak'ed. It has thinned out quite a bit, but I still can use a brush and have reason to. It appears the hair starts to drop about 3 days after treatment.  I guess that's as the drugs cycle through your body. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I have been very particular in babysitting my dark locks.

One new tip I acquired on-line was to use a satin pillow case so the hair had a softer cushion and wouldn't catch. It sounded plausible to me, my wife confirmed it. Apparently, it’s a long-time ladies’ secret to avoid bed head on a newly coiffed do. Say no more -- we were on a mission to get some satin pillow cases.

I must confess I haven't done much linen shopping, and am glad for that. Have you seen what they charge for "quality" linen? It's outrageous!! 2 Satin pillow cases were 44 bucks. Again that's just the cases -- no pillow here. Nonetheless, if it helps I'm willing to splurge. What still perplexes me though, is that they are called "luxury satin"-- I must admit, to the touch it’s justified, but when you look at the tag...it says 100% polyester.

I'm no fashionista, but isn't polyester the cheapest fabric on earth? I know for a fact my McDonalds uniform was made from polyester. Shouldn't it be called perfect polyester and charged accordingly?? It's a good thing it does appear to be helping the situation so the Satin cases stay, and the $44 goes.

On that note, I'd better wrap up. I wanted to do so, by once again thanking you for all of your messages. Life is not simple, especially nowadays. We all get caught up in our busy schedules, yet so many of you have found time to send me a note, a special prayer and personal story.

I wish I could put into words what a difference your messages make. Not only for me personally, which is a great deal, but for other readers too, the community as a whole. Just the reason behind your messages and notes -- those are actions that honestly could change the world. It's a beautiful thing called kindness. Almost all of you have never met me -yet you have forever changed me.

Thank you and God Bless

Hi Anwar.  I have been watching CTV news since the 1950's and everyone there is like family. When one of our family is missing there is a empty space in our lives. I never read blogs - never, but I wanted to find out how you were doing.  You are really missed every day as any family member would be. I can see you are taking this time for personal reflection and to "smell the roses" - Bless you and your family. Stay positive! See you soon.

I have been enjoying reading your blogs and hope that your road to recovery is a speedy one.  My cousin's husband, who is a pastor, has just battled a rare form of cancer and said to us that "If God brings you to it, he will bring you through it".  These are great words to live by.  We also have a family friend who is battling leukemia at Sick Kids so your blog helps to put a human face on this terrible disease.  We wish you and your family well and do hope to see you back on the air soon.  God Bless.

Anwar:

Just wishing you all the best. Some of us have been thru what you are going thru, or have known someone who has been there and done that excercise.  Just know tomorrow is another day and getting to kemo tomorrow will be a piece of cake, and just another day of smelling the roses.

About the satin pillow cases, at another time is life you would never buy them, but we do need to treat ourselves once in a while, and this sounds like a good thing to do for YOU.    We should all do something nice for ourselves much more often than we do.

Enjoy, and be kind to Anwar.

Miss you on TV and follow your blog.  It will be sooo sad when you stop writing, BUT you don't have to stop.  Just keep on writing anyway.  We'll keep on tuning in.

Love and kisses.

Hi Anwar,
I have never met you or even seen your reports. I stumbled on your blog about a week ago. I now look for it daily. No, I do not have Cancer (that I know of) but your words are inspiring. Thank you soooo much for sharing your journey with the world. I am learning another side of the story. You are blessed with many well wishers. I suspect that your interest in the world is part of your charm and also a diversion at times. I feel like you are becoming a cherished friend. Only best wishes and prayers.

Dear Anwar,

I hope your treatment downtown today went well what with the security fiasco happening.  You're right, it is a P.I.T.A!  Your blogs are always so interesting as you ponder life and offer tidbits of food for thought.  You are a very wise person and you continue to gather wisdom on this leg of your journey.  Kudos to you!

I am glad that the treatments are getting more tolerable for you and that you are finding the satin pillows are working.  You have a smart wife but, of course, I knew that already as I enjoy watching her reporting as well.  This must be very hard for her.  Sometimes, the ones that love you the most hurt the most when they see you suffering.  Give her my best.

I look forward to your next blog.  It's very interesting how you put that your last summer off was when you were 13 and how wonderful it would be to have 3 months off again.  I guess it is true that one should 'be careful what they wish for' because it may not be what you want after all!  Under the circumstances, I do hope that you have days that you are well enough to thoroughly enjoy the warm days of summer.

Every treatment means you are getting closer to the end of your journey and we can see your smiling face again on CTV.  We miss you!

Always in our thoughts and prayers,
Lisa and Mom

Dear Anwar,
Your postings are an inspiration to one and all.  You have, and are, approaching life and its obsticles head on with dignity and humour (sometimes the latter can get you through almost anything).  Close your eyes and picture yourself someplace doing something you really want to do when this is all over.  Now when you have a not so great day close your eyes and picture this scene - this is your light at the end of the tunnel.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Anwar :

We are pleased to hear your treatments are going fairly well. My husband has been going to Princess Margaret for 5 yrs 7 mths. He has a rare type of cancer and does not have chemo or radiation. He has spent a total of 261 days in NYGH also. The car could drive the route to P.M. by itself. I was hoping no appts were this week also. He also sits under a tree in the backyard and enjoys the birds and is watching his 4 tomato plants.
I will look for you next month. You could stay at a downtown hotel overnight if you are not up to the drive. P.M. can get special rates at one or two. Every staff person is so kind and caring. My son has played the piano with a singer in the atrium. You are far to young to have been hit with cancer. You are in our thoughts. Shirley & Rod

Hi again Anwar! Just read your blog....Yepper, the 'blown vein' sounds all to familiar! I had that...you must always insist on medical professionals NOT using that arm!! I don't use my left arm for anything (left breast cancer and also left kidney cancer)....funny thing on how many people want to use it for blood tests; IVs; or even blood pressure cuffs....I remind them that should they try to use it, the fist still works!!! They always chuckle and  go to the right arm!
I forgot to tell you in my last blog that a great suggestion I had from my oncologist at Sunnybrook was to stay away from crowds....while on chemo the slightest cold/cough/flu can kill you! Enjoy the summer.....listen to those birds and watch those plants growing!Relax and enjoy the time off. You will be better soon and in 15 years (for me!!) will think, "this must have been a bad dream" and wish you could take the summer off!! As for the hair, don't sweat it-it will come in curly and darker. If you have the satin pillow cases, indulge in the sheets too!! LOL! Have fun and take care.. Jayne in Northumberland

Hey Anwar:
I had no idea you were going through this.  I remember you from the Weather Channel.
Anyway, here is another tip.  Eventhough it is a hot and humid summer, patients often still feel very cold when on chemo.  Buy yourself a really comfortable zip-up hoody and take it to the tailors.  Ask them to sew a zipper right up the sleeve the nurses use for the needle.  That way they can have clear access and you can still stay warm.
My Dad has been a dialysis patient for almost 2 decades.  It is little things like this that make the sitting more tolerable.
Good luck to you.

Dear Anwar:
So sorry to hear about your illness. Both my Mom and sister had cancer many times and I watched them go through the treatments and the side affects they cause. I have many times sat in the cancer ward in Kingston waiting for my Mom while she got her treatments and I always marveled at the strength and determination of cancer patients.
It is amazing that at this terrible time in your life you are now able to see and enjoy some of the beauties of it, namely the bluejays, robins and the baby bunny. Keep your sense of humor and your love of life as you live through these difficult moments. Don't worry about your hair, it'll probably come back even more beautiful than before, maybe even curlier or grayer.
Hope all goes well in the next few months for you --my thoughts are with you and your family --Sandy

You certainly have a lot of 'friends' following you on your journey.  Whenever you begin to loose heart or just feel lousy remember in the greater scheme of things you are not alone.  I second the comment that you should write a book but not in lieu of doing the weather. Keep on fighting the good fight.

6/27/2010 10:32:32 AM #

Hi Anwar...please keep up the good fight!!  Us weather junkies are missing you!!!!!
What I'm thankful for is your openness in sharing your journey with all of us.  It reminds me that at the end of the day we're all the same......human and vulnerable to anything.  Enjoy each new day as it comes and you will make it through this with great results, I just know it.  The mind-body relationship is such a strong one and your positive attitude is inspiring!  Stay Strong. Sending good thoughts to you and your wife.

Anwar, I miss seeing you on the CTV News @ Noon. You are true inspiration. You are keeping a positive attidtude at a time when many would crumble and you still take the time to write your blog and share with us what you are going through and how you are feeling.  I guess in some ways it's therapy for you too.  As for the satin pillow cases, I read somewhere that they help pervent wrinkles too.  Take care of yourself and I look forward to reading your next blog.

Good thing you changed your appointment to Thursday Anwar!! Can you imagine trying to get in and out of the hospital yesterday?  I agree with you that it must have been a nightmare for the elderly or the critically ill.  I too am having a summer off after many years of working.  I lost my job - thankfully I'm not ill.  But it is strange to be home and get to experience the weather outside instead of going from Air Conditioned House to Air conditioned Car to Air conditioned work. I have taken to turning off my AC and experiencing the weather - It takes me back to when I was a kid and we didn't have air conditioning everywhere.  I have been gardening and watching the birds and squirrels in my backyard.  It's very healing - I'm sure it will help you.  Lol with the polyester "Satin" sheets but if they help you keep some of your beautiful hair -then good on you!! Take care and keep on truckin'

Glad to hear this latest treatment was a little easier.  Sorry about the added hiccup with your vein.  I have so much scar tissue from the apheresis program that the veins in my left arm are now useless and, although not life threatening or anything, it is still a royal pain and certainly limits your options for basic medical treatments.  I'm sure after watching the G20 coverage you must be shaking your head!  Keeping you in our thoughts.

Hi Anwar

Thanks again for your latest blog, i had been looking for it .
Just wanted to again encourage you with for your treatments.
Last Friday night my sister and myself, (both cancer survivors) took part in the "Relay for life" in Newmarket.
We found it a very impressive and emotional experience.
Keep positive Anwar and you'll be part of one of the many Relay's next year as a survivor.
Keep hope alive.

Hi Anwar
I just caught up with your latest update. Hope all went well with your "G20" treatment session. Each of the series of your treatments brings you closer to the end of them, and then you can concentrate on working to your goal of complete recovery.
You certainly have a huge, and growing, support group.
Lots of prayers and good wishes to go along with your very positive attitude. Keep it going.
My prayers and good wishes are there for you, as well.
Warmest regards,
Alan

How often thoughts of you cross my mind, Anwar. Your spirited jovial presence on CTV is missed. It would be great if, on a day you felt well enough 'if you could just make a brief appearance.'  Hopefully your treatments are going well, and you are able to deal with any effects of it all? And it won't be long before they are finished. My prayers uplift you, and 'prayer  changes things.' Many care about you, and what you are going through. If you are 'down' may all the comments lift you 'high.'   GOD BLESS....

Wow - what a powerful story and what a wonderful writer you are.  I just found your blog via a Facebook post, and while I don't normally take the time to follow up on these things, I'm very glad I did today.  I think you present a very clear and yet optimistic view of what people go through after a diagnosis of cancer.  And your hopefulness shines like a beacon of hope to anyone who is dealing with any trouble in their lives - fortunately some of our troubles are not nearly as serious as yours and your reminder to be grateful for everyday is even more powerful to those of us who perhaps have been whining about trivia.  Thank you.

You are an amazing person, so positive in your fight against cancer. You remind me to count my blessings.
I know that some days it must be impossible to feel hopeful. On those days we are all sending you positive energy to help you get through. I am so glad that you have the loving support of your wife, family and friends.

I enjoy your inspiring quotes and would like to share this one with you:
Life might not always be what we hoped for,
But while we're here we might as well dance.

May you soon be dancing with joy and abandon.

Hi Anwar,  I haven't been that well, to follow your journey on here, but you have been in my thoughts.  Even through your pain, you manage to write something to put a smile on MY face, and bring back fond memories - but that's who you are.  Thank you.  Those were the days, weren't they?  McDonald's.  I always had a great time when you and I were able to work together.  You made it fun!  I think it was you who tried to teach me how to cook the burgers, and my fingers kept burning to the point that John (manager) shook his head and took over lol.

Your strength and perspective through your journey is inspiring.  You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Anwar, I love your sensen of humour and positive attitude. Your mention of your summer treatments brought to mind when my 1a stage cancer was first confirmed. My biopsy ct, mri and any other tests were done at Etobicke General which is a stone throw away from me. But my scope to determine if it was in the lymph nodes or not (was not) to determine my next step...chemo or lung surgery. Both the scope and surgery was at the new Brampton Civic Hospital. I mention this because of your position at CTV and formerly at TWN as the 2 previous winters were really mild. Then my trips to Brampton in 2008 had to be on days of either blizzards or freezing rain....could only happen to Marion...LOL. Anwar, Thank You again for making me feeel more positive and I wish you and your family the very best. Look forward to seeing you back on the telly in the near future. Take care.

Hi Anwar,

I was diagnosed with NHL (Large B Cell Lymphoma) in May and have spent the Summer undergoing Chemo Treatments and basically going day by day and hopefully this will be my last treatment on September 10th.

I have enjoyed reading your blogs (even though this is the first time I have replied) and like you I have kept a very good positive attitude during this whole experience.

Your Blogs have been an inspiration for me, to look on the bright side and keep remembering that a day will come where I won't have to endure this anymore and I can return to a normal life.. and enriched life at that.

I wish you well Anwar and I look forward to reading more of your blogs.. and remember keep fighting the good fight.

Take care

I miss enjoying you on television, Anwar.  Your courageous behavior in the face of your problem is not a surprise to me.  I would have expected no less, having observed your innate confidence on air.

I will focus all my positive thoughts and energies in your direction and look forward to your return to CTV.  I also lament for you the hair loss - you have such great hair.  The only other person I know who underwent the same problems that you face is well and happy now, years after her treatment, and all her thick hair long since returned.

All the best, man. You're a real "mench".
