Let it snow

by Hester.Riches 31. January 2011 12:24

snow

... And just like that, we already have a month of 2011 under our belts. January is actually somewhat poignant to me. It marks the 1-year anniversary of the day I first discovered that something wasn't right in my body. We were vacationing in Cuba at the time when we noticed a small painless lump on my neck, while on the beach. It was a discovery that changed my life forever, and also helped save it. Well, here's to new beginnings!

It seems that this winter, Mother Nature is also aching to start anew, with an old-fashioned winter of sorts. The snow, and very crisp cold air was almost non existent-last year. For some it was a great thing, I must be among the minority.

I love the different seasons, and always welcome winter. Let's face it, unless this season is 20 degrees and sunny almost everyday, there's no point in being teased with a boring, uneventful, and damp winter season. What can you really do when the ground is wet, but not snow covered, and with a temperature that sits at 3 degrees? I know, I can hear some of you saying it out loud right now -3 degrees is a lot better than the -33 wind chills we had over the last week. Well, that brutal cold was a bit of an exception, and just for the record that bitter bite has a purpose to  -- it kills mosquito larvae and other teeny pests that would otherwise flourish come spring. If we are going to have a winter season, cue Dean Martin here please, "Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow."

To be fair some areas have seen A LOT more snow than us in Toronto, like Lucan (Southwestern Ontario). They recorded over 2 metres of fresh snow in December. I know it's no fun to be driving in it, however, once the shoveling is done and the roads plowed, it's a scene worthy of exploration.

I went for a walk today, I bundled right up and ventured through a nearby nature trail. The first thing you notice is how quiet it is. The snow seems to act like a muffler, silencing the city sounds in the background. There is only the crunch of your boot echoing as it squishes the ice underfoot. It's really beautiful. You know, if you close your eyes, you can almost hear nature releasing a sigh of content. The snow is like a much needed blanket, it forces almost everything underneath it to take a break for a few months. Wouldn't it be great if we could learn to take a cue from that? No, I'm not talking about a 12 week hibernation/vacation, (although that would be nice too). What I'm talking about, is taking the time to regularly reconnect with things that are important -really important to us. I call it the grounding plate. It's that special aspect of our life that make us want to get up every morning and make it count. We all need it, and in fact at times don't realize how much we depend on it, until it dwindles away.

We are always on the go, I think the holidays that just passed proved it. I guess it's partly because it all happened over 2 weekends this year, making the number of days we had off even shorter. By Monday, I along with others, were back at work with only holiday memories left. Anyway, I hope you had a great time, and judging by some of your responses on my Facebook page, it appears tasty holiday treats were aplenty. I mentioned, in my last blog, that this holiday was going to be a big test for me when it comes to sweet treats. Trying to avoid white flour and processed sugar is a challenge on a regular day, but that much harder during Christmas. However, as we soon discovered, with a little research there are many options. Agreed not always the most affordable, but that's what treats are about I guess. We ended up ordering an organic Carrot Cake, and I've got to tell yah, it was awesome. That is not to say, there weren't "other" goodies, I just tried to keep them below my radar.

I have managed to maintain my newfound weight within about 3 pounds. It's something I'm quite proud of. To me it symbolizes two things; one, my body seems to be working the way it should be, and two, the new diet can only mean I am, at the very least, a little healthier than pre-diagnosis.

It's interesting as I meet more and more people on the street since I have returned, the most common thing I hear nowadays is "Wow you have lost a lot of weight", followed by "you're much smaller in person". The funny thing is -- it really is true, TV does add 10 pounds, so I guess for some people who meet me for the first time it is a shock. My automatic response is usually "you need a smaller TV and I will look just right." ;)
Anyway that's all for now....will talk soon.

So thrilled to see that you are doing so well, Anwar!  Watching you @ noon makes me want to cheer for you and your loved ones, for what you have overcome this year!
I also like your point about the -3 winter temps....I may not agree......but I still like it as food for thought!!!!!!!!
It's also wonderful to read about your lifestyle changes with respect to food (and subsequent weight loss).  I also cut out the white flour, sugar, oils, etc, in 2010 and lost about 70 lbs.  Sadly, I was not as successful as you were over the holidays at resisting temptations, but trust me.....my body was not too happy with me.  So, keep up the great job!

I totally agree with you about snow...I'm a skier and as a Canadian you have to just take advantage of this weather. We recently got a dog, and I now take her for long walks in the valley, you are right about the peace...it makes my headaches go away and all my worries too. Take care and again so happy you are doing so well!

Great to see the blog back!  You looked amazing on the 6 o'clock news last night; gorgeous suit.  Well, as you know, we're not fans of cold/snow/winter.  Snow on a Christmas card is enough for us.  Still, I must admit it looks beautiful.  We went for a walk in Rosetta McClain gardens yesterday and it was so quiet and beautiful with snow covered trees, bright blue sky and squirrels happy to see us with our bag of peanuts.  The best part of winter is being retired; if we don't like what's outside, we stay in.  Take care.

Hi Anwar!

I too am a survivor, I am thankful for my Doctor's knowledge who saved my life, however mine was a rare
cancer and I soon will have my six year anniverary, I have been told by my Doctor that I am the only survivor that he is aware of who survived after 5 years.

I attribute positive thinking with recovery, and you too have positive thinking.  Congratulations!

Nice story about your Journey!

Hi Anwar,

Not being a native Canadian, I find it quite odd that Canadians dislike winter so much. I come from a country that sees little snow (Ireland), but I have embraced the four seasons that Canada offers. With such things as skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and skating (do all winter sports start with "s"?), there are lots of activities to help one enjoy the outdoors during winter. One only has to dress for it.

I frequently will take my camera and go out for walks, reveling in nature and all that it presents. That still quiet you talk about is at times therapeutic - everyone should experience it and how it can ground you. It also helps to capture a perspective on life that gives you focus, helps you to understand what is, and what needs to be done.

It's good to hear that you've got things in focus and are experiencing the full gamut of life. Understanding what's important, and steering away from distractions or things that aren't contributing to your welfare only makes life that more enjoyable and memorable.

Understanding and enjoying life is quite contagious and you certainly exude that energy.

Hi Anwar
You describe such a beatiful scene but I really don't like snow or cold. When we get snow, I also get to clean the salt carried in on the boots. I clean a building and it is not fun trying to stay on top of the cleaning. That being said, when I see snow I always remember my grandfather and all his little pathways to the woodpile or down to the river behind his house. It was like a maze because I could walk through and no one could see me that is how high it was. He used a snow blower and I can tell you it was like a perfectly built wall. I remember Tom Gibney saying one night that his idea of a perfect snow was pure white on the fields and trees and the highways are clear.
I am glad you are back with us on air and are doing amazing well. You are part of an awesome team and I am glad you are all apart of my day. God Bless

Dear Anwar,

I'm very very pleased to see that you're doing well!

We had a brief encounter at CNE more than 10 years ago when you were working with The Weather Network. My parents and I came out from one of the buildings with an orchid that we just purchased, and there you were, coming our way and interviewed us. It was a very memorable day for us and we never forgot you ever since then. You have worked hard your way up with your career all these years and we're all very happy for you. Then the news came and we're all saddened by it. The onlly thing we could do is to say a prayer for you.

Welcome back and take care!! Smile

Anwar! Great to hear that you are doing well in your journey. I myself found out this past December that I too had cancer. I began my chemo treatments on January 31st here in Oshawa. I live in Courtice. My treatments will take me to July 4th if all goes well and so far it is. I should have all new cells in me and I should be ready to tackle life anew allover again next July. The type of cancer I have is colon but the good news is that I caught it early and it is treatable. However the journey is long as you say and you have your up and down days but as long as you stay focused you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I admire any one who hs gone thru this because as I'm finding out the journey is not easy and it is an uncertain one too. You place your entire faith in the health care profesionals. They are doing great job here in Oshawa and I recommend them highly. They are in a sense my extended family. Anyway bettr run for now. Today is the day I get my chemo bottle disconnected for another week and a half. I'm free!!!

See you Anway..God bless

I Love the snow. It brings such peace and quietness when it is falling. The other Saturday the snow looked like little diamonds as it was falling. When I looked out of the window later it looked like a winter wonderland and it felt like Christmas.  I am so glad that you feeling much better, it is a testament to all that you have been doing to stay healthy. You are still in our prayers.
Take care. Marion.

Hi Anwar:
Just wanted to say how terrific you are looking and your exhuberant attitude is encouraging me in so many ways.  I finally had to have a pacemaker implanted last week after having a mild heart attack and the heart rate constantly too low.  Feeling stronger every day.  I guess we all have our road bumps to deal with in life; however, I admire you so very much for the way you handled your huge bump!  Take care and be sure to continue looking after your health.  Sending many good wishes and to say that my husband and myself continue to pray for you and your family.  LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH!

Hi Anwar:
My brother-in-law had a Ken Janzen Health and Wellness Blog in 2007.  He ran the blog from March 2007 to January 2008.  He died on January 18th, 2008 of lung cancer at the age of 37.  I'm writing a memoir about him and am commenting on your posts to compare with my dead brother-in-law's very similar feelings as he went along in his sickness.  I hope you don't mind me comparing your experience with his.  The two of you were about 3 years apart in your treatments.  Kenny had Epstein Bar Syndrome and did not go for chemo.  He finally conceded to radiation but that did no good.  I'm glad yours is a success story.  I've included a link to access his story through Wally Janzen's (his dad's) web site.  Sincerely, John Hartig Vineland, ON

Hi Anwar,

I hadn't realized you had continued to blog and was so pleased that you are continuing to allow us to share your journey with you. When I spotted the blog tonight, combined with the title and yesterday's weather, I just had to say "Hi"! I could have managed just fine without the nasty blast of snow though. My annual goal is to have pansies in the window boxes on our wedding anniversary, March 29th.  I know they survive if they get covered in snow, but now the snow will have to melt again so we can get to the soil to even plant them. I just know you'll manage that for me because you are the Weather Weenie, a man of hope, optomism and an infectious smile. Prayers and blessings continue to be offered on behalf of you and your family.

Hi Anwar

Glad to see you are still in the thick of things. As you know it has been 4 year's, 3 month's, 23 day's since I was diagnosed with stage 3 non small cell lung cancer. I just retired in March as I turned 65 and figured I would relax a little.

Cow cookies !!!!

I have been busyier then when I was working. So, as my daughter in the UK say's "Keep a stiff uper lip and your nose to the grind stone (I think the last part would be painful)"

I, too, agree with you wholeheartedly about the bitter cold and snow ... that's what a real winter should be like, not these wimpy -3 with chance of rain and fog!  And, killing germs and mosquito larvae is an added bonus to the beauty of a big snowfall and the crisp, clean air.  As I write this, we are in for a record-breaking heat tomorrow and I am not looking forward to it.  I hibernate with my dog on those days and we go for our walk at 9:30 p.m. or later.

As for abstaining from stuff that is bad for us, it's really hard to do, and even though people look at me and wonder how I can eat 10 bags of Cheese Puffs in a month and not gain weight, I know I'm paying the price in other ways (acne for one).  So, kudos to you for your stick-to-it-ness.  I did a detox diet for a month last year (boy, was that brutal!) and I lost 12 pounds.  I wasn't doing it to lose weight but because I had no energy.  I pretty much lived on Kamut bread, boiled eggs, steamed vegetables, brown rice and steamed chicken and lots and lots of water.  I keep saying I'm going to do it again and I know I need to but I just haven't yet.

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you in person yet but one day!  Onto the next blog ..
