Knight in the morning

by anwar.knight 18. October 2010 15:59

Anwar

It felt a little cold as I slowly spread the gel on my face. It was nothing too shocking -- it never really is, or was. Well maybe, when I did it for the first time, when I was a young teenager. Yes today I have decided to shave. I'm going to reclaim my facial landscape, leaving only the familiar goatee. On this day I approached the task with deep thought.

Before this journey began the daily ritual of shaving was nothing more than a mild nuisance (I'm sure many guys would agree). However, today's chore I realized was so much more. I equate this shave in a small way, to a moth coming out of hibernation. I have cocooned long enough. For now, I have been blessed with a new beginning. Today's activity was in preparation for my return to work.

Yes, the doctors have given me the green light to get on with my life and head back to CTV.  It will be a slow integration over the next few weeks, but I'm looking forward to it -- and it feels great.

I haven't manicured my mug since this all began. Oh sure, I've done the odd trim with the clippers so I wouldn't look like Grizzly Adams, but other than that, I just let it grow. It started months ago because my doctors had asked that I not shave, to avoid risk of an infection during chemo. After that, it just became easier. Not to mention, as I see it now, it has given me something else to look forward to.

On this occasion, I stood there looking at myself in the mirror and had to acknowledge that I am a different person. Not just emotionally, but physically too. I have never grown a full beard before, I'm also slimmer -- dropping about 15 pounds. My bathroom scale says I weigh pretty much what I did when I was in college. (I'm certainly not complaining about that -- except that all my clothes are now a size, if not 2, too big!!).

With a coat of shave gel spread across the lower half of my face, it wasn't long before I came to the conclusion that I was doing this all wrong. (Hey, I told you I have never grown a beard before.) Apparently it was too thick -- after 3 strokes, the razor was clogged up like a lawnmower would be during the first cut after summer vacation. I had to wash it all off, trim it down with the clippers, then take the razor back at it.  A few minutes later, and one minor nick, there he was, what seemed like a new person staring at me from the other side of the mirror. A better person? I don't know -- maybe? A more appreciative, and focused one, yes, definitely.

My newly shaved face will return to the airwaves on the morning of Thursday October 21st (my first day back at work). I'll be doing my regular beat,  the news updates during Canada Am, starting at 6:55, followed by CTV News at noon. I'm a little nervous about it all, but I don't know why.

Actually, that's not entirely true -- there are several reasons. To start, I feel like people will "see" me differently. Partly, I guess, because not all of my thinned out hair has yet returned, and it likely won't, but it's really not that bad. The truth is, I'm not quite sure I'm ready to wear that "survivor" hat. I have always disliked the terms "fighting" or "battling," when it comes to this disease. I say it respectfully, but to me, it suggests that it's a challenge you could lose. I've always preferred saying "getting treatment" for …

There are so many, many people, that have had, and will have, to endure much more traumatic treatments than I. Yes, sadly, not all of them will be successful. As I have said many times before, I feel blessed for many reasons.

On average, if healthy, we can expect to celebrate hopefully close to 80 Birthdays. Think about that: 80. I hate to simplify the beauty of life to just a few numbers, especially considering of course there are no guarantees. Nevertheless, as I have learned through this journey, it’s what you do with those 29,000-plus days that counts.

I think it's likely something that is difficult to fully appreciate, unless you have dealt directly with a life changing situation like this.  I know that, because 6 months ago, that was me. You hear about someone's adversity, hopefully you sympathize, offer compassion (which is a wonderful thing for so many reasons), and for a moment you reflect. But, I don't think we really absorb the magnitude of it, or learn from it. Does that indirect experience translate into a conscious change that we carry into our own life?

I think more often than not, it doesn't -- until we become a part of the equation. I'm not judging anyone, I'm only sharing what I think and have learned. I truly believe it's important. It doesn't mean you need to live a life like the Dalai Lama, for most of us, that's not realistic. Maybe instead we all try to be more in tune with what is precious in life and realign things a little?

How many of us, in our very busy morning routine, take the time to wish our spouse, or kids, a good day -- tell them you love them before you all walk out the door? When was the last time you made an effort to reach out to a long-distance friend, or relative? How many times have we all said, "we'll have to get together sometime soon"? Does that "sometime" ever happen? Again, I'm not judging anyone, it's just that these types of little things have become much more in focus for me. As we all know, there is only one certainty in life, and that is - we all, at some point, will die. Grasp and acknowledge what ever blessings you have been given and then explore and discover more.

I will continue to visit my oncologists, and other doctors quite regularly now to monitor my progress. Today everything looks good, but is it really gone? I hope so. Will it come back? I don't know. But, I also don't know if a tire will fly off a big rig on the 401 and hit my car. Experience from others tell me that this feeling of uncertainty will eventually fade as the months become years. In the meantime, I plan on keeping on, keeping on.

I haven't figured out what to do about my blog. I'd like to keep it going, but I'm not sure of all the particulars at this point. It may be continued on a different website. I promise to update you regularly on anwarknight.com as well as Twitter and Facebook.  However until then, a big thank you to the CTV Web Team.  They have been so kind, encouraging and accommodating, during all the updates and technical tweaks. Thanks Guys!

I also need to express a heartfelt thank you the fantastic team at Princess Margaret Hospital. Dr. Kukreti, Dr. Wadhwa, Dr. Lau and of course, Dr. Gospodarowicz. The hospital is simply one of the best on the planet, and I am blessed to have this incredible team taking care of me.  Adding to that, I am so very grateful for my family and friends, who I will continue to embrace and thank privately.

And of course, I want to thank you, the viewers and readers. You have re-ignited the torch of kindness. It’s something that likely many of us have thought was extinguished years ago. We are quite regularly reminded of the, shall we say "not so good", members of society. The random acts of selfishness, violence, and disrespect. From day one, you have extended an unbelievable show of support, love and friendship, to a stranger -- a guy who simply tells you whether it will be cold or warm, wet or dry.

I have received messages and cards from across the GTA, the province and even from across the globe: Personal stories from others who have dealt with this disease, words of encouragement from courageous people like a 13-year-old boy who was successfully treated with a brain tumour when he was 10, to other lymphoma patients, both long-term survivors and newly diagnosed. All of you have surrounded me like an extended family.

I don't know how to thank you. I really don't know what to say. You have helped me more than you will ever, ever know. Lastly, for those who are dealing with cancer, yes, it's never easy -- but no matter what, never, ever, give up. As Christopher Reeve once said, if you choose hope, anything is possible. God Bless.

See you on Thursday....

Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is bliss, taste it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.

Hi Anwar,

I am so very happy for you and your family. This is wonderful news. You have been missed indeed. You have been through an incredible journey and you fought this fight with bravery and dignity.  Even though I do not know you personally I do believe that you are correct when you see a different person when you look in the mirror. After all that you have been through it is only natural.  For me personally I will not see a different person.. I will see my local funny, bright and vibrant weather weenie who delivers the weather with the same passion as always and probably the same passion you had to fight your diagnosis.

I have enjoyed reading your  blogs as you posted them. You are a wonderful human being inside and out.

You said "I don't know how to thank you. I really don't know what to say. You have helped me more than you will ever, ever know."  Believe me seeing you back on the air waves coming into our living rooms daily is all the thanks we need.

Take care and WELCOME BACK!!!!!! Smile Smile We love you

Hi Anawr: Congratulations on your good news regarding your return to CTV.this coming Thursday. I have been reading your blog from the beginning. You have had a long journey and have received good news. I also have had a long journey having been diagnosed with breast cancer in June. I was fortunate that I caught it early and demanded an ultrasound along with the mammogram as the lump did not show up on the mammogram, only on the ultrasound. I had a cyst at the same spot 14 years ago but it was a tumour this time. I had a lumpectomy and had 3 lymph nodes removed. There was no cancer in the lymph nodes so I did not need chemo treatment, only 20 radiation treatments.I have finished my radiation treatments now and was very lucky to have no side effects at all.My tumour had tripled in size in 6 weeks time due to my body producing too much estrogen due to a hormone imbalance. I had gone through menopause with no problems at all.My cancer was called invasive lobular cancer and it was rare to have had a lump form. I too will need to see my radioligist in 2 months time for a follow up. I am truly thankful for all the support from my family and friends. It was an emotional experience to go through as I do not take any medication whatsoever and have not had any surgeries in my lifetime until my lumpectomy. I too like you, asked myself the question "why me" of all people. I am the healthiest of my 3 siblings and have no medical problems at all. I am so glad that I followed your blog and I wish you the very best in your future years and will be watching you again on C.T.V.

Hi Anwar,

As the sun rises and sets, some things are meant to be. Your being back is one of them. You may be nervous about people 'seeing' you differently. I think we should - you should proudly wear your 'look' as a badge of honor for the road you've travelled. I know the road you travelled is not one you would have chosen but what a blessing it's been for you and all those who are learning from you.

Wonderful news,I was at the clinic with my husband on the 12th of October. He had to have surgery to remove part of the large and the small bowel due to crohns and colitis (fortunately no cancer.) The doctors clinic is at the Odette Cancer Clinic. While we were waiting to see the doctor I met two ladies, both with different types of cancer. One lady was not handling things well, we three talked and I told them both to check you blog for inspiration, and to never give up.
Looking forward to your return to our ctv news family. Don't worry about your hair, it doesn't matter to any of us, you on the road to good health is all that we care about. I was concerned about the hair loss but then I decided I'm me with or without hair, take me the way I am. Don't like it your problem not mine.
Enjoy every day. Myself, I will just write off 2010 as one I choose not to repeat. I lost my sister in March, lost my best friend two weeks ago, nearly lost my son and my husband.

Hello Anwar. I am not much of a news watcher anymore but I just tuned into CTV News this evening and only now discovered what you have been living with for the past several months. I was shocked. 11 years ago I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. 9 years ago my son (then 10 years old) was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. We are both doing well now. One of our fondest memories of my sons fight with cancer was attending a Christmas Party at Cullen Gardens in Whitby. You were also there that evening doing the weather. We met you and my son and a group of children from the Starlight Childrens Foundation did the weather with you. You also gave all the children your autograph. We still have that autograph. Just wanted to thank you for providing those children (and their parents) with such a special memory.

We are so thrilled to hear your treatments were successful and your long hiatus is finally coming to an end.  We'll be sure to set the VCR for 6:55 a.m. so we can watch your return as soon as we can drag our retired butts out of bed!  A little disappointed to hear you have shaved for the occasion as you looked very dashing with the beard.  Regardless, hair, thinning hair, no hair, beard, goatee whatever:  we are just SO DELIGHTED and grateful for your return.  Wishing you all the best, always!

What a wonderful day this is!!!  To hear that you are well enough to return (very slowly) back to CTV is a real thrill for us.  We have followed your blog and enjoyed every word of it/them as they have come from your heart and were so encouraging -- you are truly a blessing.  You certainly have used your "detour" as a tool to encourage others and we will continue to pray for you, Anwar.  There is a GOD and he is still in the business of answering prayers.  Stay well, friend and God Bless.

You will be just fine tomorrow and all you have to do is remember how many of your friends and fans are rooting for you!!
Don't be nervous my friend -- and don't forget to LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH!  Our prayers are with you.

Hello Anwar:

Welcome Home
You have been missed and I was so happy to see your bright smile this morning.
We lost one of our dear tea ladies two weeks ago and should have celebrated her 83 birthday yesterday so timing which is your strong suit couldn't have been better for your return. I know she was watching from on high this morning and wishing you well.
Stay strong and take it slow. We are all just so thrilled that you have come through this difficult journey.

Greetings Anwar,
I am not sure if you remember me but you were one of our 'reporters' for toronto.com 'the show'.

Needless to say, your career has progressed since those heady days, as has mine.

I was very happy to see your return to CTV and your recovery from Hodgkins.

My father was diagnosed with the same thing last summer and is now free and clear. It was a stressful time for all of us as we had just been blessed with an adoptive daughter (whom we had one week notice of her arrival) and my father was my mother's prime caretaker (she has Alzheimers). Long story short (kind of) I think the positive attitude you have shown is a huge part of beating this. I know the arrival of our daughter was part of the reason my father came through this so well.
Good luck to you, thank you for sharing your journey and continue to take good care of yourself.

Dear Anwar,

Somehow this week I managed to miss checking for new blogs. We were up early to get ready for an out-of town funeral. I was just about to head to the shower when I heard your voice.I quickly turned in disbelief. Tears of joy filled my eyes.

Every day this week beginning on Sunday has brought us sad or bad news about a family member or friend, including today when we learned that our daughter- in- law's father had suffered a heart attack.

For the past few weeks I try to ask myself at the end of each day, "What was my moment of joy?" Sometimes it's easy to answer and some days it's a real struggle. I had my answer very early to that question today.

You continue to be special and loved and we continue to be blessed.

I am so glad that you are back. God is good. My prayers remain with you and your family.

He is suffering so much with Gist turmors and Liver cancer. It will be six years on Nov 30th (also our 53rd Anniversary). Please pace yourself and get plenty of rest. You look terrific. If you are at Princess Margaret on Wed. Nov.3rd you can see and hear my Son Dale play piano with a singer and bass - in the main foyer at 12 to 1 pm. Welcome home Anwar - to my home that is! Wonderful to see you again. Your have been blessed. At sometime or another the experiences we have in life good or bad, especially the bad & difficult can be shared with another going through the same experience, that follow  behind us. If we don't have that experience we can not truly sympathize and understand their feelings & fears. Once time has passed and we have healed, can we be that significant support to another. Somewhere, sometime in the future you are going to be an amazing support and encourager to someone going through what you have experienced. As you have been blessed, you too will be a blessing.

How wonderful to see you again Anwar.  Thank you for taking us on your journey.  Thank you for giving "we" who are still on our journey strength and hope.  Perhaps some day in the future we will be honoured to read a book written by you as you are very gifted with thought and words.  You have touched both the young and old (like me)with your wisdom and kindness.  Yes, you are a different person than when you started on this path, for through adversity we grow and learn to appreciate the things in life that really matter.  Try not to overdo things and become too tired.  Hopefully we will still be able to keep in touch with you.  I have always loved these few words:
"And what is as important as knowledge asked the mind?  Caring and seeing with the heart answer the soul."

I close in friendship.

My best wishes for continued good health. Olivia Newton-John describes herself as a 'thriver' rather than a survivor. A much more positive 'hat' to wear. Wear it proudly.

Welcome back Anwar. It is great to have you back on the air. You are so very good at what you do and you were dearly missed.
Hope the first week has gone by without a hitch and that we get to see you for many weeks and years to come without interruption for any more treatment.

Wishing you all the best for the future and it's nice to see you back on CTV. I agree that being positive is an importance key to any struggle that we all have may it be big or small. Looking forward to seeing you in the morning. Take care and continued good health!!!

Hi Anwar,
We spend our winters in Florida where we watch you on satellite TV.  Last spring when we returned from Florida you were suddenly missing when we got home, and I kept saying to my wife.. I miss Anwar... I wonder what happened to him??  Then a month or so ago we found out you were still around!!  To-day I watched you with your BIG HAT on the CTV news at noon and it's SO GREAT to see you back!!  We wish you all the very best!  Keep up the good work, you're looking great, and we are just so happy to see you back!!

Wonderful to see you on TV again.  I look forward to seeing you regain your usual cheerful energy.  Meanwhile, don't overdo it... use your strength to heal.

Hi Anwar,

Kind of got the news about your comeback late Tong. But I have to tell you it was such a pleasant surprise when I saw you right before the Christmas on CTV. I screamed your name and cried. That was a tough battle but it is OVER! Wish you many many years of health and happiness. Keep smiling Smile.

Bring heavy snowfalls this winter please Laughing.
