Why me? Why not me?

by anwar.knight 12. May 2010 14:53

So just where does one begin when it comes to a life-changing journey like this? What do I have to say, and perhaps more realistically, who really wants to hear about it?

I guess, if nothing else, there may be one person -- just one, who may be dealing with a similar challenge in life. Maybe he or she will find comfort in knowing indeed they are not alone. Stuff like this happens every second, of every day. Yes, of course, you think ‘Why Me’? I say -- it may be more appropriate to think ‘Why not me’?

When diagnosed with cancer, any cancer, you are forever inducted into a club. Like it or not, (and who are we kidding -- no one likes it) there is a stigma with cancer.  A dark cloud that only outsiders, looking in, see. As I sit on my soapbox here, let me tell you, it's not always doom and gloom.

Yes there are sad, very sad situations. People and families that endure extremely painful, traumatic conditions, illness that my diagnosis pales in comparison with. However it’s important that we also talk about the many positive outcomes: the treatments, the remissions -- and yes, the cures. People do beat cancer; it happens all the time -- they live long, redefined lives. Dare I say, even more fulfilling lives.

No, of course, you don’t wish for it ... but you deal with it. As a friend of mine, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, said, “it sucks!” She’s right -- it does suck. At that very moment you hear the word “cancer” your life, as you know it comes to a screeching stop. You make a very sharp LEFT turn, and head straight down a very winding, unfamiliar, bumpy road. Whatever you were doing is put on hold and you have a new mission in life -- to get better.

Thankfully, and I really mean that, I have been diagnosed with a subtype of Hodgkin's Lymphoma that is thought of as a research success story. Extremely gifted people, along with lots of dollars, have figured out how to treat and cure this disease. But it’s far from the only one.

I’m not kidding myself, there will be challenging days ahead. That’s pretty much expected when they drip what is the equivalent of liquid drano in your veins. However, without the bad days you’ll never be able to find and truly appreciate the good ones. I know that sounds contrived and clichéd ... but it’s something I have always believed in.

There are never ever any guarantees in life ... from here on, I will make each day count ... let the journey begin...

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.
~Winston Churchill

Its interesting as I sit in my own family room, watching the news and I see your story.  I am currently waiting to hear results of my own "cancer test." (biopsy).  Although I am full of fear, I take comfort in hearing you speak of your motivation and take on the situation.  It brings me a sense of motivation myself to fight whatever comes my way!
Thank you Anwar and I wish you nothing but the best!

Look forward to seeing you back on the air soon!!

Anwar, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. You will fight this and beat it, that I am sure of. I come from a family with a long cancer history, the most disturbing being my siste Melisssa. She was diagnosed with Hogkins Lymphoma on her 25th birthday to be exact. She endured the chemo and all the other not so pleasant things that go along with it. My family was devastated at teh diagnosis but have come out of this with her appreciating life and one another so much more. I myself am battling a serious disease and my father is battling prostate cancer, so we as a family know what you are going through. While there will be days that are rough, there will also be days where you are thankful to see life a different way as strange as that sounds. My sister now is lucky enough to be a new mother to an adorable healthy baby girl named Sophia and I have never seen her so happy. Things will work out, sometime we have mountains to climb before we can reach the full spectrum of life. May you be well.
Just another note...there is a site called the caring bridge where numerous people including my sister go to speak with others going through the same illnesses and it keeps your friends up to date on how you are doing. the site is www.caringbridge.org/
take care and sending good healthy vibes your way

I just heard the news Anwar and I wish you a speedy recovery.  I was diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer in 2002 and stage III breast cancer in 2007 and I'm here to tell you I'm still here and I am healthy and enjoying life.

I too didn't think "Why me".  After all, Why anyone.  It happens.  I thought "Why now" as my youngest was only 9 the first time and I couldn't imagine her having to grow up without her mother in a family of boys.

You have a great attitude which will help you get through treatments.  Welcome to the club that no one wants to join and get back soon buddy.  I'm gonna miss ya!

Five years ago I heard the words "You have breast cancer." I relied on the experts and found out all I could about the disease. The journey seemed scary complicated at the beginning. I broke it down into small pieces. Doctor appointment - done. Test results - done. Doctor appointment - done. Pre-operation tests - done. Treatment appointment - done. and so on....

Thru out the entire process I tried to keep a positive attitude and accepted help from family and friends when treatments made me very tired.

I have a friend who survived stage 4 breast cancer and she gave me great advice. Get copies of all paper work and tests just in case you move from the area or your doctor retires. Plus she said:

"How do you eat an elephant?
            One bite at a time."

me: "Can I eat a cow instead?"  Smile

Hello Anwar,
So very sorry to hear of your diagnosis, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in Nov. 2006 that had already spread to my liver, they could operate on my colon but no cure for my liver, I was told to do 12 Chemos and make sure my paper work was in order.
12 chemo treatments shruk the cancer to a point that I could have suregry ,long story short I have since had 2 surgeries on my liver and I'm back on Chemo total number 29, but I'm still here I still see the sunrise and I still see the sunsets, stay positive, never give up, god bless, my prayers are with you and your family, hope to see you back on CTV real soon!

Anwar,
May God bless you and your family as you venture on this journey that will surely see both good and not so good days.  I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in September, 2009, and just finished chemotherapy treatments in April, 2010.  Remain positive even in those darkest moments.  You mentioned on the news today that you have an incredible support system of family and friends.  I, too, have been blessed with an incredible support system of family and friends who have helped me through this difficult time.  Allow your strength and courage to be your guide.

Dear Anwar,

I heard the tail end of you & Christine speaking, but didn't quite catch what it was all about. So I googled it & I'm so terribly sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed w/a type of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but @ the same time I know that you have the spirit (like Patrick Swayze) to fight w/all your might (both physical & mental) !!! I have seen you since you were on the weather channel & I have always enjoyed you because of your spirit !!! Don't ever let your diagnosis take that away from you !!! Similar to the story of the lady who's in town for her father's cancer treatments & lost her mother in January & recently lost her teenage daughter & laptop was stolen w/all pictures in it & she also has I believe leukemia. Journalist wondered how she is so graceful about it. She simply answered she had a good role model-her daughter. As the old song goes "Gray skies are going to clear up, put on a happy face" !!! God Bless to you & yours & a speedy recovery so we can all see your smiling face & spirit back on our televisions again soon !!!

Anwar I was shocked when I saw u on news at noon on ctv  and you were telling your story. I have known you for many years from your days at Energy 108 and with us at Z1035. You have always been a great and positive guy and now more than ever u have to be strong and positive. Cancer is never an easy thing to deal with no matter how old or young or who it hits. You are a strong positive person and I wish you all the best in your journey. People say if you are to get any cancer this is the one that can be treated and beaten and I know you will. I'm sure you will be back on ctv with your wit and laugh and charisma in a few months and letting us know how hot and sunny and how beautiful a day it's going to be and when u beat this it will be a beautiful day aswell.

Dear Anwar,

Today on the noon news, my mom and I wondered where our favourite weather guy was because your sense of humour and wonderful smile always lit up any gloomy day.  Then, later on in the newscast, we were devastated to hear about your impending journey; a journey that my dad, cousin and even my dog have had to undertake.  It's so scary but I am glad to hear that your optimism is intact and that you have family and many friends supporting you.

When you first started out at The Weather Network, we loved watching you and knew you were destined for great things.  We emailed you to tell you that you made us laugh with some of your comments and were very surprised that you emailed us back!  We were tickled pink!

When you were at Pizza Nova several weeks back, I wanted to come and meet you but, unfortunately, I was too far away.  One day, I hope.

I know you will be back but, in the interim, we will definitely miss you.  We will think of you every day when the weather is being broadcast and praying that your journey has more ups than it does downs.  You are not alone on this journey as we are all walking right beside you, supporting you every step of the way.   I believe everything happens to us for a reason but it does confound me why bad things happen to good people...

Hurry back!

Lisa (and mom)

Dear Anwar: I wish you a speedy recovery with a future bright and blessed...I am a 4 year breast cancer survivor and I was told that my positive attitude and taking time for myself was a great treatment program, along with the part of "drano" for the veins..LOL and other treatments...but I must say my team of doctors were fabulous and everyday I thank them...Stay strong and remember this is about you...take the time for yourself and let others do for you they need to, its their way of helping and feeling good themselfs...God bless you and your family...See you soon...Catherine and family

Hey Anwar,

Sorry to hear about your news. I am a 10 year cancer survivor and I understand what you are saying when you get that initial diagnosis, the world seems to stop. All i thought about were "Who is going to take care of my children?" You are only allowed a fleeting moment of self pity. You then have to be positive, do as you are told by your medical experts and think of the future. You will be back before you know it, who else is going to tell us what our "weather du jour" is.

Rest when you need to and live life when you feel like it and always remain positive.

God Bless,

Hello Anwar,
I have my last check-up this July. The Doctors are going to tell me they don't want to see me anymore. I have it all planned.
I too have done a 360 in my life since being diagnosed with cancer in 2007. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but I have never been happier in my life. Why does it take a smack in the head to change our perspective on life?
I want to recommend a book to read. 'Picking Up The Pieces. Moving Forward After Surviving Cancer,' written by Sherri Magee & Kathy Scalzo.
I'd also like to invite you to my method of moving forward and giving back. I paint feng shui artcures to bring calm, balance and attract positive energy. Artcures Inc.

Dear Anwar,
I was truly sorry to hear that you are battling cancer.  I know you are the type of person who will fight this and win.  My son had cancer at the age of four in 1987, A.M.L., was a particularly nasty leukemia and nobody at that time survived it without a bone marrow transplant.  Sean didn't have a family match so the transplant wasn't an option.  He battled 10 months of heavy chemo and four months in hospital.  He paid a heavy price along the way, brain damage, epilepsy, developmental challenges and hepatitis C., but, guess what?  He is alive and leading a pretty good life. He celebrates his 28th birthday on June 1st.  The Chalmers family all wish you a speedy recovery and you and your family are in our prayers.  Remember, never give up!

Sincerely, Laura Chalmers

Dear Anwar,

I was watching the news today, May 17th and saw you speak about your new journey. The timing of your story gave me goose bumps and I felt compelled to write. Today is my 9 year 'cancer free' anniversary. My family and I lovingly refer to it as "Butterfly day" as it was the last day of my treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma and the first day of a new life/a new beginning.
A few words of advice...take it one treatment at a time and plan something fun to look forward to at the end of your scheduled treatments. Always remember that faith is believing in something that cannot be seen or touched...don't lose faith even when things seem at their worst. Sometimes in life your mind is the only thing you can control...choose optimism, choose happiness, choose to laugh at the little things that happen along the way.
All the best,
Jennifer

Hi Anwar:  I was shocked to hear of your diagnosis on ctv at noon. It was quite shocking. My wife and I have a friend with similar problem and she beat the odds and was cured. It took time and patience and with the aid of that terrible chemical it proved successful. We will be praying for you and hope that you are one of the people who survives and if you apply the same enthusiasm that you have with your weather forecasts, I am sure you will be cured. All the best and gods speed.

Hi Anwar,
I'm so sorry to hear that you too have joined the "with cancer" club.  It's amazing the strength you find when you are tested with something like this.  Like you I am a young adult that has been diagnosed with cancer. I found out about a year ago that I had stage 3a Non-Small Cell lung cancer. I couldn't believe it, I was a healthy non-smoking 30 year old woman...how does that happen!!  But like you I too found strength and hope in my family and friends, they have been my rock in good times and bad. I was very fortunate to tolerate my treatments well, but I'm not gonna lie, you will have bad days, because frankly, Chemo sucks!! However I find that every day that I wake up, no matter how I feel, the air is sweeter and life is better A.D. (after diagnosis), so much so that I don't remember who or what I was B.C. (before cancer). It is a life altering thing to go through this stupid cancer, especially at this stage of our lives, we have so much more to do, to give, to see. So have courage my friend and be strong. Bald IS the new black, so wear it proud!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it is really inspiring that you want to help others when you yourself need help. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April, 2009.  Although it was difficult to hear the C word I knew that this would not be an ending but simply a new beginning.  I have been cancer free following 3 PSA tests that have shown undetectable PSA and both my wife and I continue to be positive that my cancer has been beaten.  Although having no prostate leads to some changes in your marrried life we have moved on and know in our hearts that life continues to be good.  We look forward to each new day and wish you all the best with your treatment and your eventual recovery. God bless you on your journey.  We look forward to seeing you back on CTV News with your cheery newscasts and positive attitude. We know your same positive manner will carry you through this journey and you come out of this a better and even more positive person.  Keep smiling.  Life is good.

Hello Anwar,
I wish you all the best in your future battle. I was diagnosed with Non-hodgkins Lymphoma a year ago last November. I had chemo treatment every 3 weeks for 8 treatments and now I am having maintenance chemo treatments every 3 months for the next 2 years. I thank god if I had to come down with cancer, that is now not 20 years ago. The knowledge and the treatments are so much better now than they were then. The LOVE AND STRENGTH of your family will get you through it. I go to Oshawa for my treatments, and the love and support of the staff there are truly amazing, as I am sure is the staff where ever it is you go for your treatments. GOD BLESS AND AGAIN I WISH YOU WELL.

This happened to you because of who you are. You obviously make many ctv viewers family and friends alike very happy. You will make many others during treatment and appointments happy by your just being who you are and how you are. It always sets ones mind at ease knowing there are others around who are so positive and that is why you were chosen. I hope it doesn't put the pressure on you. Don't worry, it only wastes time. Your job is to get better! Take care.

Anwar, you are in my prayers.  I know that it all must seem so frightening and numbing right now but, it's said that the greatest growth a person has through their lives comes from the heaviest of burdens.  I'm certain that you will come through this a winner in all ways.  One may not get an answer to the "why me?" question.  And, one may not gain comfort by the "why not me?" question.  But, one can gain acceptance and hope by asking "What am I to learn through this experience in my life?"  I'm sure that the answer to this question will become apparent as time goes on and you come through the other side of this with the mountain you see now, being nothing but a molehill behind you.  My prayers for you are for healing, strength, courage, calmness, guided doctors and for growth of spirit as you beat this.  You will beat this and heal and be back to bringing smiles to our faces each and every day at lunch again.  Hang in there!  I'm watching your blog entries as you go, thinking of you and sending you warm and healing energies.

Mr. Knight, I am very sorry to hear of your situation. I first met you in May 2008 at the Scarb Town Centre. You were covering Cops for Cancer for the noon news. My daughter was having 18 inches of her hair cut off to be used as a wig for cancer patients. You introduced yourself to us and thanked her for doing what she did. She didn't get on TV that day which disppointed her, but your wonderful personality made up for that. We watch you all the time and really love your style. Please take care of yourself, love your family, and take each day one day at a time. With an attitude like yours, you'll beat this and we'll see you back in front of the camera in three months!

Hi Anwar,

I learned of your condition and I'm wishing you well in this journey for you and your family.  My brother too had Hodgkins and went through chemotherapy and radiation. Please lean on your family and let them take care of you through the treatment.  If my brother or I can be of any help to you, we would be more than happy to be there for you.  If you would like to speak with my brother who is a survivor about anything, please don't hesitate to ask.  Wishing you well and I am praying for you.

I was so sorry to hear your news - I can relate to you - in January of 2001 I was diagnosed with colon cancer and went through chemo, radiation and surgery - and am grateful to be able to say I've been in remission since
November of that year!  As you said, - a positive attitude it vital and I credit that almost as much as the treatment I received - and prayer.
Know that  my prayers are with you - and yes, be positive because you have every reason to be.

Anwar, I know this is a very stressful and anxious time for you, so I just wanted to share this story with you in hopes it will lift your spirits.
A woman in our church had the same diagnosis over 5 years ago. She had the treatments, and now is healthy, happy and traveling the world! So, I know this will be a challenge for you, but I am looking forward to seeing you on the news and Canada AM soon!
Take care, and know you have fans all the way up in Goderich watching for your return.

Anwar, so sorry to hear your news today and all you and your family are facing. Thank you for sharing your journey - as making it ok to talk about cancer - the ability to be open and honest is still something I wish for many fellow survivors. So we are all interested in your story and hoping we can lend our support in some way.  Wishing all the best for you, and your family, as you begin your journey.

Dear Anwar.
We have been watching you since you were on the Weather Network and always enjoyed your upbeat program. as we have since you joined CTV.
If you have to have cancer, this is probably the best kind to have.  I agree with your comment about" Why not me?" when so many people have this dreaded disease.
You have a wonderful attitude and a great sense of humour that will get you through this. Thank you for sharing this with your viewers.
All the very best

Yes, Anwar cancer can be beaten, but it sure takes it out of you in the process.  My husband has twice beaten NHL, but it has taken it's toll.

Today, however we enjoy our garden and listening to you and Tom so we can plan our days doing what we enjoy most, spending time together in the garden.

Your zest for life will carry you through along with a good support team and the many prayers that will be said on your behalf.

Dear Anwar:

A wonderful woman I knew had cancer and once said (paraphrased) When you're diagnosed with cancer you pass through a door and only those who have passed through it fully understand.  Those of us who have passed through that door welcome you reluctantly as we would like that constant flow of new arrivals to stop.  You are a ray of sunshine to many Canadians even when you bring news of showers or worse.  Know that now we will try to return the favour and be your rays of sunshine when you have bad moments, and your fluffy cloud to comfort you when times seem tough.  We are also your cheering section saying you can do what we've already done.  I want for you to have a quick and full recovery with a minimum of discomfort.  Then I want for me and all of us to see your smiling face back on CTV ASAP! Prayers, blessings and positive thoughts...

As a 4 year breast cancer survivor/thrivor I share all your opening comments.  I, too am very blessed to have a strong foundation of support through family and friends. More importantly my belief in a higher Being is my greatest asset. After those initial weeks of 'haze' I put my fate in the Creator's hands and asked for strength, dignity and grace to face whatever was in store for me. It was only then I knew I could and would meet this head on.  You are in my prayers and I wish you well in this new journey and can't wait until you're back on CTV.,,

Anwar, my wife and I enjoy your  great enthusiasm for weather reporting. Your premise that we should ask Why not me is one we have tried to apply to our lives for many, many years - yep we are old folks.

I was just in yesterday for a muscle biopsy and found it helpful to interact in a positive manner with all with whom I came in contact.

What a difference it makes to ask a nurse what she enjoys most about her job or a surgeon why he went into that area of medicine.  Simple interactions, indeed but  they help the care giver to see you as an individual as you see them as individuals, too.

God bless you and your family. I know that when one member of the family is called on to go through a challenge such as yours - the whole family has to go through it, too.

Hold tight to God and He will hold tight to you and those whom you love.

Anwar,

This is never good news. Same for my husband who has just finished his chemo for nonhodgkins. But he's winning; that's the good news. We send our good wishes and prayers to you and your family who will be struggling with this as well. The journey is long, and it will feel long, but you will emerge on the other side of this. It will get better, it will be beaten. Have faith in whatever you believe in, but most of all, have faith in yourself that you are strong enough to take it, rise above it, and defeat it.
Take the time you need to heal yourself; everything else can wait.

Anwar; I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in sept.2004. It was a scary thing to hear but I did not,or ever have, ask why..Because why not? CANCER SMANCER!!We are stronger and tougher then that disease!MY only words of advice are use everyone and all of your resources at your disposal. Knowledge is power and I found that I was so busy just trying to survive that my family and friends felt "left out".If you know what I mean.I did not even think to ask for help and I think it would have made my journey a little easier.

Hey Anwar,

Just wanted to wish you the best as you take this much-needed time to look after yourself. I was so crushed to hear about your setback, and had to take this opportunity to thank you and let you know how your kindness and thoughtfulness helped to shape my life.

A few years back, as a rather aimless university grad, I was considering pursuing a career in broadcasting, and emailed you to ask you about the training you'd undertaken in getting to where you are. Not expecting a reply, I was thrilled when you wrote back and recommended Humber College's Journalism program. Needless to say, that's where I ended up going, and immediately after landed my dream job.

The fact that you'd take the time to write me back meant so much, and I'm forever grateful for that little bit of friendly advice that helped cement my decision.

Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers,
xo

My mother asked me to send a message to you.  She was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma 5 years ago this month at the age of 79.  She had a very rough go of it but did finish her chemo 6 months later and is still around enjoying her bridge games and looking forward to her granddaughter's wedding.  It won't be fun but your attitude sounds good.  Remember that if you lose your hair, it is only temporary.  My Mom's hair came back soft as a baby's.  One other piece of advice she would like to pass along - stay hydrated!  No matter how much you don't feel like taking fluids, make sure that you do!  Mom learned the hard way.  Take care.

Hey Anwar
Your words are very touching - and most importantly very true. I know some of what you speak of as I am a cancer survivor of 27 yrs now. Although a different cancer to the one you have been diagnosed with, there are many similarities to any cancer journey. You will be missed but I look forward to seeing you once again on CTV.

Dear Anwar:

Let me tell you I can certainly imagine what you are going through.  As you say, life sucks, and it will forever change your life, but hopefully, in your case, as in mine, it will make life more fulfilling and you more appreciative of life and to be alive.  Let's not kid ourselves, you have a battle ahead of you, and you will be putting toxins inside of you to fight this terrible disease, but you are a strong young man, and I know you will fight the good fight and beat this terrible disease.

I am a middle aged woman who almost lost her life to cancer about five years ago.  In June 2005, I was diagnosed with Stage II colon cancer.  I had anterior colon resection surgery, where they took out a complete section of my colon, but the good news was, they got all the cancer.  However, in the process, the doctor accidentally nicked my spleen, couldn't stop the bleeding, and I had to have my spleen removed.  This means that my immune system is not 100%, and I just have to be careful of my immune system, which I do.  I was in hospital for about a week.  After five days after I got home, I ended up back in hospital with the tissue-eating type of E.coli infection.  I had a tube coming out of me draining three abscesses inside.  My immune system started shutting down.  My left lung collapsed, and I had to have a chest tube put in.  I got the super bug or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus infection and was in isolation for ten days.  I was on constant antibiotics and medications to help the nausea so I could eat something.  I was in the hospital for one month for that, and I almost didn't make it.

Through it all, I put my life in God's hands and prayed for the strength to survive this painful ordeal

Hello Anwar:

I also heard via the news of your recent diagnosis with cancer. Just reading some of the messages from people tells me you are loved by many who wish only the best for you.  Attitude is also a great healer and you seem to have a very good one, but during those times you  find it hard to keep up the good spirits just remember  there are a lot of people cheering for you and especially praying for you.  God hears all prayers and there are certainly a lot of prayers for you to get better.  Please add my prayers to that list.  I know you will get through this, it is in your nature not to give up. You will enspire other people who are going through the same thing.  If God brings you to it He will bring you through it.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

In Barrie we have an amazing weatherman Bob MacIntyer who I believe was diagnosed with the same NHL in 2000 and he is doing very well and still telling us about the weather

Dear Anwar:

Let me tell you I can certainly imagine what you are going through.  As you say, cancer sucks, and it will forever change your life, but hopefully, in your case, as in mine, it will make life more fulfilling and you more appreciative of life and to be alive.

This means that my immune system is not 100%, and I just have to be careful of my immune system, which I am.  I was in hospital for about a week after the surgery.  Five days after I got home, I ended up back in hospital with the tissue-eating type of E. coli infection.  I had a tube coming out of me draining three abscesses inside.  My immune system started shutting down.  My left lung collapsed, and I had to have a chest tube put in and be put on oxygen for a while.  I got the super bug or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus infection and was in isolation for ten days.  I was on constant antibiotics and medications to help the nausea so I could eat something.  All my veins collapsed, so I had to have a PIC line put in my one vein with the help of x-ray.  I was in the hospital for one month for that, and I almost didn't make it.   Less than, two months after I relatively recuperated from that, I had to have oral chemotherapy for six months.  Of course, there are always unwanted side effects while on chemotherapy, but I must admit that my oncologist was very good about also giving me all the medication I needed to help with such side effects, and I didn’t have it as bad as some.  Still, I had quite a time just having to take these chemotherapy pills, because I kept thinking that I am putting poison in my system, but I then came to realize that it was these poisons that were also going to cure me of the cancer for good, and they did.

Through it all, I put my life in God's hands and prayed for the strength to survive this painful ordeal.  I pray for you now that God give you the strength, courage, comfort and peace you need to get you through your upcoming battle.  It will be a battle for your life, but I know that you can do it.  It sounds like your type of cancer has a very good chance of being cured for good, and I pray for this is the case for you as well.  You had a job as a weather anchorman.  Now you have a different job – to fight this cancer and get better.  All you need to do is concentrate on that right now.  Your family and friends will thank you for it.  As I said before, struggles like these can help you appreciate and love life and living all the more, and you look like a man who enjoys living.  My prayers are with you and your family.  As I don’t have Twitter, is there any way that I can keep up with your progress?  Take care and God bless.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Anwar.  Please accept my heartfelt wishes for a successful treatment.  I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2001 and while I had a rocky start I adopted the philosophy of Knute Rockne, the famous football coach of Notre Dame ... "Life is 10% of what you are given, and 90% how you respond".

Despite the tough times ahead, please try to stay postive, maintain a sense of humour and say thanks for all the love and attention you will receive.  For me, yes my life - through chemo, radiation and a stem cell transplant - has been altered but it has enriched my life through the incredible people that I have met (medical team, technicans, nurses, staff, patients and caregivers).  If I can ever be a a resource or support in any way to you - or you just want to have a cup of coffee and chat - please consider it my privilege to share my experiences.

FYI - In June, 10 years after my diagnosis I will participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer.  Cycling is often referred to as an individual sport, a solitary act, but on this the weekend I will not be alone.  I will ride with more than 3000 other Riders including my son (and stem cell donor) my doctors and members of the medical teams that have saved my life. We will ride with you in our hearts.    Sincerely, CT

I was so sorry to hear about the journey you are about to take. I took that journey 4 1/2 years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I found that with the strength and support of my family and friends I was able to go through all the surgeries and treatment I had to.  I am sure with all the support you are getting you will be doing the same.  I will be looking forward to hearing about your progress.  We will miss you while you are healing but we wish you all the best.  Take care.

Dear Anwar:
I have a confession.
As I sit with my leg raised treated for Celiolitis, a litlle story began about a month back with my hurried admission into the hospital and series of test filled with speculations. Once setteld in the bed at night, I spoke to Almighty, that for myself at this age I have done enough for you to take me in peace, but if had my son here I would have begged that give as many days that you could pass on to my son. Long before, my concerns subsided as if the nature had started to smile on me.I have seen your smiling face on the T.V and my gut feeling is that for whatever your current, you will sooner return to your viewers with a good weather forecast every day. Wishes,

Keep the positive outlook and sense of humour...sometimes that's the only thing that helps!
As far as the Chemo goes...get a pick line if it's being offered.  Take that from one who knows.  Learn everything you can and take notes.
BUT:  Don't get lost in it.  Just take a deep breath and brace yourself for a bumpy ride.  Take all the hugs you can get and enjoy them.
Keep smiling...cancer can be beaten.  I have realized this for 9 years now!!!

Dear Anwar:
I got very emotional learning that you have been diagnosed with a subtype of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Indeed When one is diagnosed with cancer, any cancer, one is very frightful. I am very impressed with your overall attitude towards life, especially when you uttered these words, "There are never ever any guarantees in life ... from here on, I will make each day
count ... let the journey begin...". It is extremely important to be positive, undoubtedly there is always a cure. Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favorable results. Not everyone accepts or believes in positive
thinking as you do. I applaud you for that. Some consider the subject as just nonsense, and others scoff at people who believe and accept it. Among the people who accept it, not many know how to use it effectively to get results. It is quite common to hear people say: "Think positive!", to someone who feels down and worried. Most people do not take these words
seriously, as they do not know what they really mean, or do not consider them as useful and effective. I am confident, the treatments, the remissions will cure this dreadful disease. As has been said, people do beat cancer; it happens all the time -- they live long and eventually a very healthy life style. I along with my wife Parvin pray for your speedy recovery. May God give you and the family lots of strength. I am confident
You will pass this journey with hope and courage.

My husband contracted colorectal cancer 5 yrs. ago and fought against horrible odds and lost.  However, we stayed happy, content with neverending positive attitudes.  He died 2 yrs. ago.  Now the rewarding part.  I have joined forces with the Canadian Cancer Society and my job will be to visit the caregiver in the home and perhaps can help their mysery having been there myself.  Anwar I have no doubt that you will come thru this with bells on.  Please be positive++++++++++.  Perhaps you might be on my call list when you arrive at home.  May life and happiness be yours Anwar - to you and your family...Marilyn Kippen

I fought every minute of every day of the last nine years to save my boy....hope, faith, courage, strength....we did not get our miracle but I believe that to get through each day you must carry those qualities in you....there will be days of weakness and pain but try to keep moving-even if it is a shift to the side not every move has to be forward to say you have gotten through your day....my love to you, stay strong.

Hi Anwar,

I think of you every day. I've made it a daily routine of saying a little prayer, gently blowing it out the window and knowing that it will get to you.

I wish I could do more.

Anwar as so many people before have said "Always nice to see and hear you doing the weather and making your comments"  You appeared to have a genuine great attitude and apporach.  I was at a basketball game in Brampton - Turner Fenton SS - You attended doing your "Travelling Weather Show" Carol Charles was doing the camera work.  You finished and I had what I wanted (photographer) but wanted to say hi and told you what a great job you do.... Your response was "Well isn't that nice of you to say"  We shuck hands, you thanked me a again.  I thought as I was leaving, as busy as you were you still were a "Genuine Nice Guy"  People like you are rare today.... Nice to have meet you.   You will be in my prayers and thoughts....  With your attitude and approach this WILL be beaten.  Ken

Hello Anwar,
I read about your illness on the SOWNY board and am
so sorry to hear what you're going through.
I'll always remember how kind you were to me, coming
to my Global farewell party, even though we had only
worked together a very short time. I could see then,
you were a good, caring and genuine person, and
that will serve you well on this journey.
Know that I'm thinking of you and hoping you will be
back at work, laughing and bringing smiles to all our
faces very soon!

Hi Anwar,
Just saw the link for this on the CTV web page. I am happy that you have chosen to share your journey with us, your loyal viewers, and we all wish you the best for a speedy recovery! I have been a fan of yours for many years, having listened to you on the radio in the past (107.9, I believe). Keep up the great work! With your positive outlook, I am CERTAIN you will beat this. All the best! C.

Hi Anwar,
Just wanted to say that it is very brave of you to share this journey; however it is OK to be a little "selfish" and skip the odd blog if it has been a hard day.  This is also a time to be good to yourself.  Best of luck.

Hi Anwar,

We met over 20 years ago. You worked with my then boyfriend, now husband. I used to come help out, cause boy did you guys need help!! LOL. We still talk fondly of how much fun you made that place. Watching you on tv over these last few years has been awesome! We like to brag "Hey, we worked with him when....." You have always been a strong person. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you! Janet and Robert Linton

Dear Anwar,
When we heard about your journey through Ken and Christine, on the noon news, we, probably like many others, thought "how could this be happening to such a wonderful person".  We can pick our friends, but unfortunately (or otherwise), illness picks us.  It's up to the individual how they deal with it.  I can only say, that if I were advised of a potentially life threatening illness, I would like to think that I could handle it with the same positive view that you are exhibiting.  You have many friends, and even more that you have not met yet.  We are all sending our prayers and positive thoughts your way, and looking forward to seeing you back on the air... with your usual smile of course!
Best Wishes Wally and Diane
