2x2 Tattoo

by anwar.knight 12. August 2010 18:53

Over the last couple of weeks I have had an unbelievable opportunity to people watch. You know, when you sit down in a public place, and just simply observe. It's especially engaging when you're in a different neighbourhood. It’s even better yet, maybe 5 star status, if you're in an unfamiliar city. As it all unfolds, you capture little snippets of people's lives.

What's especially interesting, for some reason, if you are the one walking by it is seldom that you take notice of the people that are sitting down-- they could be analyzing you. Anyway, isn't it amazing what people say and do in public? Granted, you aren't normally privy to the complete context of that moment, but it’s rarely dull.

Recently, I noticed a lady who was trying to control her unruly child. She'd had enough. So, in a joking manner, she exclaimed to a stranger: "Do you want to buy some kids? ... 3 for 1," as she dragged her little girl by her side. Then, there was that young man, rationalizing to his girlfriend why they were lost. He seemingly ended the discussion with a pretty awkward scratch and poke of his rear end. What?!

So where am I going with all of this? Well, it's been several weeks since my last chemo session -- the break has been very nice. Although I don't feel completely normal, on many days, its close enough.

There are still some minor aches and pains, but my immune system is steadily recovering. Gone are the days of taking antibiotics just to help heal even minor things, like a hang nail. This new found strength has allowed me to once again interact, and I use that term loosely, with the world.

As I gaze at life happening all around me, I can't help but wonder if some of those people, maybe even the very person that just walked past me, is, or will ever deal with something like cancer. Hey, I'm human, and I would be lying if I didn't admit that, at times, I feel cheated. I was struck down when I thought I was invincible. How naive of me. Nobody plans for this to happen, and that's why I try not to dwell on it. Instead I try to focus, as best I can, on the positive. I know I am one of the lucky ones. I am blessed with a form of the illness that is treatable.

This journey, as I'm learning, is so much more than just one of physical healing and recovery. It has re-incarnated itself and has evolved into a crash course on living life. I find that I second guess almost everything now. I'm trying to figure out some sort of balance.

I ask myself, what did I do wrong? I don't smoke, never did, and I don't drink. I eat relatively healthy, so why did my body fail me? Why not the business man on the patio across from me right now? He's been smoking non-stop. Why not the heavy set person drinking that supersized Cola? I am learning that it's so unfair to judge or assume anything about anyone. How do we know what other people have/will or are going through? How many people in the hospital have looked at me and wished they had my illness, instead of what they are diagnosed with?

I don't think there is a definitive answer to any of this, except that we all, at some point, will have to face some adversity. Sadly, the circumstances and experiences will vary greatly. Some will be much, much worse than others. Maybe that's the "great equalizer," as they say. There is always someone who is worse off. That doesn't mean it will make your situation any better, but hopefully it will help put things into perspective. We need to celebrate and reflect on our blessings, no matter how big, or small.

I am reminded of that routinely --each time I go to the hospital. This leads me to my next phase of treatment. Radiation. For this, the doctors and radiologists commemorate the occasion with a set of free tattoos. Yes, when it was first mentioned to me, I envisioned some prominent, yet undescriptive body art that would forever serve as a battle scar of sorts -- a signature of my ordeal. A tattoo, of any kind, is new to me. I know, you thought all weather weenies were almost mandated to display a small lighting bolt, or mini tornado, didn't you?

Nope, my skin is virginal -- not to mention, the medical team was not taking requests. Their sole mission was to leave 4 precisely placed micro dots on my upper torso. They are only about the size of a freckle, inked in a North, South, East, West pattern, but are crucial. They serve as a reference guide to help position a targeted beam of radiation to be administered in the coming days. I should point out, radiation therapy is used in many different ways when it comes to treating cancer. It provides a variety of different objectives. My experience, much like the entire treatment protocol so far, may be completely different compared to another patient with a different cancer.

On the eve before the first scheduled rad zap I had a few butterflies in my stomach. It almost felt like the night before the first day of school. I was a little anxious, probably because I didn't know what to expect. I requested a late morning schedule in the hopes of avoiding traffic. (And, to be honest, to also help me catch up on some sleep. I have been experiencing some restless nights.)

Upon arrival, I nervously proceeded to the radiation ward.

The check-in procedure was pretty routine and very well organized. I noted a patient in front of me in the waiting area. He was an older gentlemen, wearing khakis and a button down, shortsleeve dress shirt. He seemed pretty relaxed, despite the fact that much of his neck, up to his chin was a purplish colour. It was, at least as far as I could tell, the effects of radiation. I was aware from reading some hospital handouts that changing skin colour and texture is one common, usually temporary, side effect. It still freaked me out a little bit. It was shortly after, that I was called in, "treatment unit number 6," the nurse said. There sat a large, heavy duty electronic gurney, with what looked like a monstorous faucet spout arching over it. It's robotic and is able to rotate 360 degrees.

With the help of two technicians I was placed in position. You lie in a custom made pre-frabicated type mold (it was prepared a week or so before). It ensures that you will be able to stay in a fixed position for a long period of time. The technicians then went on a scavenger hunt, seaching for the micro tattoos on my chest. (In my mind, I thought --  first one who finds them among the follicle forest wins a prize!) All 4 marks were present and accounted for, then quickly highlighted, BOLDLY, with a magic marker to help the technicians determine the exact position. Using a simple ruler, they would call out measurements to each other to ensure each coordinate matched with what the Oncologist mapped out originally. We were at the point of no return. Before I knew it, the multi-million dollar machine was revving up, and the arm was winding into position, then - BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. The radiation had begun.

It only lasted for a few seconds before they set the machine to its next position via remote in another room. I sat there as still as I could, with my eyes closed most of the time. The sounds were very foreign. After a while, with all the revving, winding and Bzzing, I had a flashback. This treatment was almost like a scene from a James Bond Movie -- I think it was Goldfinger. The villain straps 007 on a table and tries to cut him in half with a high powered laser. "No Mr. Bond ... I expect you to die." (There goes my crazy Capricorn mind again!) The next thing I knew, the bed was being lowered and the technician said "you're all done for today." The first treatment was over.

.....The journey continues.

Human life is purely a matter of deciding what's important to you.

Hi Anwar,

Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us... the viewers, readers.  That is very kind of you. With all that you have on your plate you manage to take the time and keep us up to date with your progress. I look forward to your blogs. You speak from the heart and you are not afraid to do so, you say what you are feeling and I admire that.

I am sure that some days are worse than others. When this is all over and you are back to feeling 100% and back on air. (You are missed terribly by the way) You should take those 4 little marks and have a real tattoo made. Not in memory of what you went through.. but as a celebration that you made it through and you beat it and came out on top.

Take care of yourself and as odd as this may sound enjoy this time off with family and friends.  The support from family, friends, neighbours and co-workers is what will help you beat this, they are the ones who are always there for you.  Never forget that.

You will come out on top!!! That I am sure of.

Take care my friend..

Anwar, you are truly a source of comfort everytime I review your blog.  You are an inspiration to us all.  It's amazing how interacting with what surrounds us either through pen, computer, camera or verbally can teach us about life.  When I need reassurance concerning my own health problems, I need to look no further than your blogs.  Continue to make us laugh, smile while embracing life around us.

Hi Anwar

Your description of your 1st treatment brought back a ton of memories of my time in unit #6 at PMH.  The team there is awesome and they and others waiting for treatment used to let me go ahead of someone else so I could catch the 10:13 train back to Oshawa.  You are so right when this machine starts up, you are wondering how and why this is happening.  After 12 years I still can see my 4 little permanent dots.  They are a reminder that we all survive in one way or another.  Good luck on the rest of your journey in unit #6.

Hi Anwar

So good to see your blog.
I have been checking every day for it, and it was good to see it.
I went through the same type of treatment last year at this time.
And take courage, the only side effects i had was some tiredness.
So Anwar keep up your good spirits, and you will continue to be in my prayer as you go through this.
May you be back to complete health soon.

Hi Anwar,

It was wonderful to hear from you again. My friend and I often talk about balance in many of life's situations. Sometimes it's really hard to find. I can't specifically relate to your circumstances but I can certainly relate to the search for that balance. We are all inspired by the way you seek and find something positive to share on your journey. As you continue to scale your mountain, please continue to know that my thoughts and prayers continue to climb alongside.

Hello Anwar
Good to hear from you again, I know about the tatoo, I got mine in 2008, there is just one little dot that is visable now. There are days when you fear will it come back, but then you decide, take one day at a time and hope and pray it never returns. It is always in the back of your mind. My thoughts and prayers remain with you and your family. The fatigue will stay with you for quite some time. Take care. I like the picture. We need to be able to see for ourselves that you are doing ok.

Just want to say that that picture is so cute. Looks like a chipmunk with a shadowed beard. Not to worry, everything will go down in time. It's hard to tell you to be patient 'cause I haven't much. Anyway, a day at a time. I liked the content of the blog. When you're not mobile you notice lots. Hi, Anwar; Still missing your presence on CTV. I love everyone there, but your sense of humour carries an extra sense of fun, too. My radiation treatments were 15 yrs. ago. Hi Anwar,

Your strength and grace is such an inspiration. I am a strong believer in the mind and body connection and the impact is has on healing and overall health. You are doing great! I often ponder the same questions you posed, why does life throw some people uncomprehensible challenges and not others? It is indeed unfair. Maybe on day we'll all understand. This is a great time to refocus and be reminded of what truly matters in our lives. I have no doubt you will be feeling great in no time and will take this incredible insight with you into old age! I and am so looking forward to seeing you back at work!

Our prayers are with you and wishing you a speedy recovery!

Jennifer |

Your ability to remain optimistic and find the humour in your situation are wonderful, Anwar.
People who find themselves facing disease/adversity quite naturally wonder "why me?". Life is not fair.
Like others, I too have many days of "why me" - trying to recover from a stroke and learn to speak again when nobody can tell me why it happened to me. It's a logical question, a source of frustration and anger at the unfairness of it all.
The fact that you maintain such a positive outlook will be in your favour - the power of positive thinking cannot be underestimated.
May your immune system continue to grow stronger and may the journey to full recovery grow shorter so you can resume your pre-illness life.  You inspire us all. God bless; know how many are walking this journey at your side.  Kate

Dear Anwar, Miss you on CTV news, I missed your sense of humor and your zest for life needless to say I was shocked when Christine announced your illness.  Thank you for sharing your journey with us, I was diagnosed with colon cancer just 4 days after you, I had never been sick or been in hospital in my life, I read your experience with chemo and radiation and it was a total mirror to my own, the fear, anxiety and even getting used to the C word. Keep your Family and Friends close, as I have found they are your best supporters.  I wish you all the best in your journey, and look forward to reading more of your blogs.

I have been watching for a new blog and we are all glad to hear from you and receive and update!  Your journey gives all of us inspiration.  I have had friends suffer and you are so right to say we shouldn't make assumptions.  The cashier at the grocery store may be fighting cancer or just waiting for biopsy results.  As people pass by us, we are so quick to assume and judge without walking in their shoes.  Everyone's lives looks so different on the surface don't they?  Thank you for reminding us all that we are all kindred souls.
And many years from now, your tattoos will remind you of the biggest battle you faced - and conquered - and everything else will be small potatoes in comparison.

Hi Anwar, am glad to hear you are progressing with your treatment. I've missed you on the weather and was wondering how you were doing Jeff from CTV directed me to your site.

As a person who is legally blind and who has mutliple illnesses it's perfectly normal to ask why me. There's no reasonable explanation other than as my mum used to say why not you?

I however think we're given these experiences to share with people on our journey, not necessarily to be inspirational, but to show people that hey bad stuff can happen to you but you can survive it and do something positive with your experience by educating others through talking or writing as you're doing here.

Will be checking in often on your progress now that I know where to go. One foot in front of the other my friend, just keep on keeping on.

Hello Anwar,
My family and I have been fans of Canada AM since day one. We sure miss you and pray and hope your treatments bring you back to your "normal" self real soon. Your courage is amazing and your sharing of this difficult journey is to say the least very generous. It helps others focus on the important things in life and gives hope and resolve to those who have perhaps lost the will to live.
My dear wife is a breast cancer survivor (now cancer free going on 16 years). She,like you decided to fight for recovery and underwent surgery, chemo and radiation. It's a rough go as you well know however the battle is well worth it dear sir. She is now a proud grandmother of 4 and life has never been better for her.
You have a wonderful attitude and such a positive mind. With the support of family, fiends and colleagues as well as your many fans at Canada am, we know the energy will flow your way and help in your recovery.
Keep it up and God bless.

So good to see your picture, hope you are as well as you look.  Good Luck with your radiation treatments. Display your tatoo proudly, you have earned them.
Your blog on Love an Laughter was very thought provoking and quite true, there is nothing like a good old fashioned belly laugh. As I thought about what you wrote, I realized that I haven't REALLY laughed for 9 months since I lost my father. I still don't feel like myself, I have a void that I cannot fill, a feeling of being a lost soul and extreme guilt that now my mother is alone.  Family is everything, nothing else matters and nothing else can replace it.  We need to cherish our loved ones everyday. take no one for granted.
God Bless you Awar. Please keep in touch.

Thinking of you.

Hi Anwar!
Hope the radiation treatments aren't as hard on you as the chemo... You must be glad that those are over with!
People watching is fascinating, isn't it? We are all so different, yet so similar... there's hardly an expression I hear from someone walking by that I don't recognize or sympathize with.
While you're relaxing, keep your eyes open in your back yard: I noticed yesterday that the fall migration has started (sigh. you were right with your tweet today).
Best wishes, and I look forward to your next entry.

I am going to be 13 on Aug.25. I had brain tumor when I was 10. I went through chemo and radiation. It was tough. You will do fine. I lost all my hair to. Hope you feel better soon

Dear Anwar,

I want to say how inspirational your blog's have been, I admire your courage, and humour during what is likely the most difficult time in your life.  Your optimism will surely see you through these hard times and help you come out on top.  I am confident you will beat this disease.

This year I rode in the Princess Margaret's Ride to Conquer Cancer this past June. To be a part of all those bikers riding for a common cause is nothing short of miraculous.  Many thanks must go to the organizers who were amazing. The most touching moments however were the people who stood on the sidelines with their signs that displayed loved ones names expressing their gratitude to the riders for participating.  It truly inspired us and made the journey that much easier.

You will be in my prayers and I look forward to seeing you back on CTV - giving us great weather updates Smile

Take care, Bev Foster

I have noticed you have not been on CTV lately and wondered why - now I know. I pray the treatments will cure the cancer.

Lookin' good, Anwar!  Keep on smilin'.

Where has the summer gone?  I hope that, despite the circumstances, you were able to enjoy your time off.  I know some days will be write-offs but I strongly believe in the power of the mind to alter reality.  Did you know it's been proven that collective thoughts - good or bad - can change the outcome of a situation or being?  It's incredible.  We can change our reality!  Check out Masaru Emoto's books - The Hidden Messages in Water and Water Crystal Healing:  Music and Images to Restore Your Well-being.  It's fascinating work.  I hope it will help you.

I think in this day and age, we need to open our minds up to more natural ways of healing as we are all cellular beings and resonate with earth and nature.  It's difficult to wrap your mind around it at first.  Everything is about balance and the destructive effect of the chemo and radiation on the cancer needs to be countered with positive, healing energy to replenish the body and soul.  Chinese medicine is all about building the body's natural defenses back up after a bout of illness.

Hope I don't sound like a freak to you and I hope you are as astounded by those books as I was.

Take care of yourself and keep us posted; we always love to see a new blog posted!

Anwar,

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I thought to myself "Where is Anwar?"  I usually see you in the mornings, either filling in for Jeff Hutchison on Canada AM or during the quick check ins with local news during Canada AM.  But it's been a while since I saw you last and I just learned this evening while watching the 6PM news that you are battling cancer.

I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear this news.  But I do have to say that you look amazing for someone who is fighting the fight of their life.  Your update was very nice and very heartfelt so I couldn't help but to add to the long list of comments you have already received.

You can definitely add me to the list of those whose support you have and who will include you in their prayers.

I look forward to the day when I see you back on the news cracking jokes with the rest of the Canada AM crew members.

All the best and stay strong.

Hello Anwar:
I just saw you on the CTV News at 6:00.  You look great and it was good to hear from you and to hear of your positive update.

It's interesting isn't it when you are not caught up in the rat-race world we live in, and have the time to observe the world around you, that we find out what is really important to us, friends, family and nature.

Keep up the good work and enjoy the good times.

We were just talking about you the other night and were wondering how you were doing and there you were on the screen tonight.

The beard - looks great on you and you look great too considering the journey that you have been enduring for the past several months.

We were thrilled to see you and wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.

There is virtually no one that has not been touched one way or another by cancer - sad but true.

However, reading your blogs you offer inspiration, hope and put a smile on my face - you are one in a million for opening your life to the viewers.

We hope to see you back very soon doing the weather.  Get better soon, keep up the fight.

Sending you a huge get well hug.  We would also like to send your wife one - she is in the battle with you - and often those people are the forgotten ones.

Wishing you all the best.

Anwar,

My work schedule has me missing the news and it wad only today that I found out about your illness and road to recovery.

I'm a lifelong CTV News watcher and I wanted to wish you a speedy recovery.  One day this disease will be history. Cancer has touched my family.  Too many family members have fought that battle.  It's a disease that doesn't discriminate.  Rich, poor, fat, thin, black, white - everyone's a potential target.  Take care of yourself.

Hi Anwar, I must say , it was a great pleasure seeing you on last nights news. You are looking great. I do love the beard, with the hat look. Sexy!! I know what you are talking about when you talk about your tattoos as battle scars. I had heart surgery a few years ago. I have a large scar running down middle of my chest. I consider it my battle scar. I have often thought of having a snake tattooed over it but, I am not brave enough. LOL . Anyway, You take care and do what the doc's tell you. I can't wait till you are back doing our weather. You are missed. Take care ... Tracy

Hello Anwar,
Thank you the articles you're writing, giving us an insight into what you're going through; your feelings, your pain, your amazing attitude, sense of humour is still there too, etc.  As I read, I feel as though I'm understanding a little better what you , and others have to deal with when you/they are walking along this road. You express your feelings and thoughts SO very well.  I really like the pictures you took in your backyard -- so clear, as well as beautiful !  I'm glad you're making progress, even though it's probably slower than you and the rest of us would like, and that through your writing, you're encouraging others. All the best to you Anwar.  The Lord is a very present help in time of trouble !!  Look forward to seeing you on the CTV News broadcast soon !
